They were the first professional team. The major leagues came about decades later. The Cincinnati Red Stockings, as they were called back then, would travel around playing local amateur teams.

The 1869 Reds have been the 1st professional group; the gamers have been given paid to play. there have been many beginner communities -- cities, athletic golf equipment, colleges -- for the Reds to play against. the entire "gets a commission for this" factor caught on, and by using 1871, the national association became formed -- the 1st professional league.

Well, they were the first professional team. The major/minor league distinction came later.

Clarification; I think they were the 1st PRO baseball team. They may have played unprofessional team(s).

They were the first team where players were paid, they played other teams that existed during their era who weren't paid. Yet.
How do you know about this, I thought you were English?
