Of course it depends on the training. But if the dog is being rescued you may not know how good or bad the training was. Just be careful (as with any rescued dog). Rescued pit bulls have likely not had great training (probably the reason they were surrendered in the first place).
Also, I would disagree with people that say pit bulls are just like any other dog. All dogs have different characteristics and personalities. Research the breed and find the pros and cons before bringing the animal home with you. It's important to find a dog that will fit your home and lifestyle well. No breed of dog is right for everyone.

Why do people have such a fascination with pit bulls and whether or not there good dogs? They are no different than any other dog! Yes, if you train them right and don't teach them to fight, they are great dogs and are also wonderful with children! They can have a tendency to not get along with other dogs, but the ones I know get along great with even little Bichons! I've never known a more gentle breed. They have such a horrible reputation because of crappy owners that don't give a crap about their well being. They don't know what there missing. There dog could be very loyal and happy...abusive owners should all be put away for life.

My mom has rescued 3 pit bulls from unhealthy circumstances. Her first was once a combined pit dog that was once deserted at delivery. He now thinks he is my little brother. Her moment was once a black and white male (CLEARLY Pit in look) part starved that her husband located close his paintings. He was once timid and shy for a protracted at the same time, however is now like facet of the household. The 3rd is a lovely pink feminine. She had escaped from a dwelling that we later found out had tied her to a tree for weeks with little meals or water, at the same time pregnant. This puppy was once epidermis and bone whilst she got here to us, and were extraordinarily uncared for, and misplaced an whole liter of dogs to freezing temperatures. Now, she sleeps within the mattress with my mom and her husband each and every night time, and sits within the chair with my mother all day. Never as soon as have any of those puppies proven the slightest little bit of aggression. There quite isn't any such factor as a "well" or "unhealthy" puppy breed. Every puppy as its possess character, and the way they behave depends on how they are handled.

See the question should be pitbull owners good or bad
why because it is the owner who makes a pitbull good or bad yeah there are a lot of cases when pitbulls have attacked but most of the time people don't take in mind the life that these dogs had to go trough with their irresponsible owners, If you were tight up to a tree all day and never had any type of love from your owner wouldn't you be aggressive these dogs are just doing what they have been thought they try too hard to impress their owner and if their owner has taught them that fighting, being aggressive, and being unfriendly is good then that's what they are going to do.

Anyone who really knows Pit Bulls would say they're good dogs . I know they're good dogs . If you train them at an early age they will accept or like other dogs . There are four levels of dogs tempermants around other dogs ..

Dog Social
Dog Tolerant
Dog Selective
Dog Aggressive .

These four levels are represented of what tempermant the dog might have around other dogs .

Dog Social means that they're good around other dogs and will accept some of the most rudest behavoirs .

Dog Tolerant means they put up with another dogs behavoir hence the word tolerant .

Dog Selective means they have friends but are very selective of there friends and may "dislike " certain types of dogs and can be easily be offended by bad or rude behavoir .

Dog Aggressive means has a very limited amount of dog friends . Sometimes no dog friends . Sometimes oppurtunitistically leash reactive with a weak handler or no training .May have a short fuse during play and needs heavy supervision and safe management protocol .

These dogs are like every other dog . They can becomke dog aggressive to dog tolerant with the right training .

My pit bull is the love of my love...he is the best dog I have ever owned. He is loyal, funny, loving, protective, faithful...I don't care what people say about my dog. I am a grown woman with a 40 hour a week job, self supporting. I am not a thug like some think about pit bull owners. I just love the breed. Just like everything else in life ......each to their own!

Good dog - but not for everyone or every household. Like every breed, they have their characteristics and they should be respected and understood. For example, some pit bulls are high prey drive and are dog aggressive - there has been some bad breeding going on (not the dog's fault that has heightened this problem in the pit population). Owners should socialize their animals young and be aware of this possibility. All dogs should be well trained regardless of breed. It's called respecting the dog and the breed and handling situations appropriately.

I have a golden retriever that is high prey drive and will chase and kill rodents and some small animals. I don't put her in situations where she might kill someone's pet rabbit or kitten for example (she is OK with adult cats, all dogs and all humans). It's called knowing your animal, its breed characteristics and respecting them.

I see both things on this website - people who minimize the pit bull's size, strength and potential for prey drive and dog aggression and the bad breeding problem and call them the sweetest dogs on earth (because theirs is a good dog) and others who are convinced they are born killers and should be eliminated. They are neither.

This is a loaded question, and I am sure you are going to get mixed replies. From my own personal stand point, based on 15+ years of working with animals, I am going to tell you this.

Pit bulls can make loving, wonderful pets. They are faithful companions, but are stubborn to a fault. They need to be obedience trained, and kept in a very secure enclosure. If you want to own a dog like this you need to be responsible as a pet owner and make sure that your dog is kept under control at all times. I would be leery to take him or her to a public place until you are absolutely sure of the dogs' reactions to other dogs, people, children, loud noises, etc. With proper training and responsible ownership, they can make great companions. Would I choose to own one myself? No. I have seen way to many times that a beloved family pet turns and has hurt someone seriously. If you own a dog that has been bred for their aggressive traits, you must never let your guard down.

I truly believe in my heart that they are wonderful loving animals if raised by the proper people. ANY DOG can be a killer. People don't really hear about the dog’s life before it attacked someone. They don't hear how the dog was chained to a tree for most of its life. How is suffered in the summer heat or in the winter cold. How a dog is raised is how the dog will act in life. Blame the people who do these terrible things not the poor dogs who were not raised to know any better.

any dog can be a good or bad dog. At the doggy daycare i work at the pitbulls are VERY sweet. They will jump up and give you kisses. The shih tzus aand chihuahuas on the other hand, would most likely tear a chunk of your lip off if you let them get that close.

Pitbulls and other larger dogs that are raised as pets, not fighters are generally better behaved because their owners realize if they are not properly trained they could do alot of damage. Small dog owners tend to not put the effort in because their dog is just little and think it can do any damage. They think it is cute they way they bark and growl at everything and trying to be tough.
