Its not that they just dont believe in Him themselves. They are desperate to make others loose faith and berate people who do believe in God and attempt to make believers seem unintelligent.

Cynical Chick - No, I cant say that I'm at all threatened by the "concept that there may be NO God." The idea never crosses my mind because I am quite certain that He exist.

I am going to go out on a limb and say 'guilt'. They just can't put their finger on it, but in the back of their heads there is a lack of peace when they say certain things. They feel troubled.

And wouldn't you know it?

Jesus said the the Holy Spirit would be doing just that! In John 16:
8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;

He DID say that, didn't He!

My Lord always keeps His promises!

I am an atheist and I am not threatened by a belief in God. Matter a fact I married a Catholic. I think you are confusing what atheist feel. I have no problems with Christians (and other religions either). I do have a problem when they blame societies problems on atheist. You are free to worship what ever you want, but leave me alone.

Everyday people finally start speaking up for reason after 1000's of years labouring under the yoke of religionist division, delusion, witch-hunts, disinformation, scaremongering, and superstition....

And you ain't gonna like it are ya??

I don't think you'll see atheists knocking on your door, or burning you under the name of non-belief, but if it makes you feel better, we'll just agree that you're right, and that your question (and for that matter, your assertion that we are all doomed to hell) is valid, and not a vapid strawman.

And I don't think all religionists are stupid people. Stupid people just, seem to, you know, cleave to religion.

Don't say you ain't noticed...they go like this...

"If evolution is tru then:"

" Y du monkeys xzist" and "Why don't rocks have wings" and " You hate God because you don't believe in him and PPL like U R scared"

etc, etc, etc etc etc etc etc.

Now we all have morons on our team. But I'm agnostic, which roughly equals NO team. Just how I like it. And you must admit, religion has more than a fair share of self righteous bloviating kooks.

Now if the religionists will leave me alone (I'm gay and an unbeliever, hence a magnet to self-righteous prictoids) I will not be testy with them.

But I will still argue for reason. Who wouldn't?

'Geezah' nailed it. This question is hypocrisy of the grandest order.

But, poppet, 'threatened' by a belief in God? Please. Come now.

Non-believers (and other religions) only get threatened by actual believers, not by the concept of 'belief'. That just doesn't make sense unless at some proxified stretch.

Nope, don;t feel threatened by belief. But believers continue a track record of demonizing or plain killing those that don't 'believe'.

There are a lot of very intelligent Christians. The ones who aren't don't need atheists to make them appear unintelligent. They do that all by themselves.
(my favorite example is still the banana guy, I guess he will stay in my all-star list..).

Atheists are not threatened by god, it's impossible (they probably feel less threatened by god than by the flying spaghetti monster). They can feel threatened by believers who can indeed harm them.

Believe in God if you want. I don't care. If you are happy and make good choices, believe in God all you want. You may be the next Einstein for all I know.

I don't want you to shove religion in my face. I am sickened that people come up to me and say, "Repent for your sins." I have no sins. And don't you think that you should have some room for error? There may be a god. I'm not going to say that there is 100% absolutely no god at all.

i have met 3 types of religious people:
#1. Ones that accept me and our differences realizing that either of us can be right and neither of us know for sure
#2. Ones that accept me for constantly judge me for my belief because they believe they are right, i am wrong, a sinner and a hedonist
#3. Ones that don't accept me and constantly try to change me by constant threats or "how my life could be better with christ"
Unfortunately the most common religious people is group 3, then group2 and group 1s are just so hard to find. That is why atheists seem to be "threatened by your beliefs".

Atheists are do not feel threatened by nonexistent entities. We are, however, quite wary of their oh-so-real followers among us.

We couldn't care less what you believe as long as you do not try to foist your nonsense upon us.

We don't have to try to make you seem unintelligent. Questions like this one do that very well without assistance.

ADDENDA

Isn't it interesting how many theists insist on worrying about us poor atheists? Why is it that there are so many questions on Y!A phrased something like "Why do so many atheist [sic]..." when we, according to their made-up numbers, account for only about 10% of the population? Seems like they are the ones feeling threatened.

If not, why the proseltyzing link? Turnabout: http://www.atheists.org/

Touché!

We don't make believers look unintelligent. The unintelligent ones do that all by themselves. We just state how we believe. You are the proselytizers. We just want you to stay out of our government and our public schools. Believe as you wish.

They don't seem threatened to me! But I DO believe they can't understand why anyone would base their faith on someone who told someone who told someone X 1000, who told THEM that the bible is the real word of God because the writers said so! And the bible is so full of ridiculous stories that this is ANOTHER reason they don't get why so many people follow any Abrahamic god.

Just my POV.

They aren't threatened by belief in God. But many atheists feel threatened and offended by theists. And you know what they say about the best defense . . . .

We actually are not threatened by a belief in god. It's like being threatened by a belief in santa claus. You want to beleive in god? Go ahead, you have the right to beleive whatever you like.

What we are threatened by is people who insist that we must believe what they believe, who try to sneak their belief system into our schools under the guise of science, and who try to change our secular form of government into a theocracy. We're annoyed by people constantly telling us that we're going to be burned in hell by their kind and loving god for not using the brains and free will that he purportedly gave us to invest in the proposition that he doesn't actually exist.

And if some believers come across as unintelligent, well, if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck ....
