I'm capitivated. However, after reading 3 pages, and hearing about how people lived 900 years, I have to ask:

WHY THE HELL ARE PEOPLE KILLING EACH OTHER
OVER THIS NONSENSE????

AHA..now i see why people are killing themselves. Everyone has a different translation..One version says and God created a Vault and called the Vault Heaven, another group Screams, Heaven isn't a VAULT, you moron, God created a Firmament called heaven. Then the Catholics add their version, which says GOD created a DOME and called that the sky...something which doesn't appear in other geneis versions....I'm beginning to see the light...

Keep reading. God gets quite an attitude in just a little while. He pretty much kills everyone. So if you follow that book......

I don't understand your question. Christians are not at war with each other? A long time ago, yes.. Much of that fighting centuries ago was over power, money and land - with religious differences used as an excuse.

Kinda hard to wage a pure Christian against Christian war as Christians centuries ago when Christ gave the 11th commandment to love one another.. So the wars in the past were more about other things than religious differences.

Catholics consider the Bible to be part story, part allegory, part poetry and some history..

If you read the Bible word for word as if it is history through and through, you will scratch your head more than once.

The Old Testament stories are very good.. And after you have read the Bible, you will understand more of the Biblical allusions in literature (including the classics and poetry) and in movies. If you are interested in literature, you would need to study the Greek/Roman myths and literature - Odyssey, Iliad, Aeneid - poets like Keats et al would make classical allusions.

To understand and appreciate the history of Western Civilization, one really has to read the Bible to put many things into context such as decisions of Kings, what motivated people to act in specific ways..

You are on an exciting study adventure of Western Culture! Congrats!

Let's see ... You say "The sun came up early this morning," don't you? But you know, scientifically, that the sun doesn't "come up". The earth spins on its axis from west to east, and makes the sun appear to "rise" over the horizon. Yet we continue to use this expression. It is poetic imagery that expresses scientific truth in different terms.

The Bible is filled with such poetic imagery and symbolism. Even numbers are symbolic in the Bible and must not be taken literally. For instance, it's no accident that there were 12 apostles, since there were also 12 tribes of Israel.

Also, the Bible was written centuries and even millennia before scientists came up with factual explanations for phenomena like the origin of the universe.

You must read the Bible with an open mind and appreciate how people long ago understood the world. This does not mean that the Bible is "nonsense". It is the continuing story of man's relationship with God. Read it as such.

The heart of mankind is not always kind and loving to each other. They kill because of want of power, glory all the greed that befalls mankind. The Bible is not nonsense when understood and used in the way it was intended. It is suppose to make us better people who trust and love God. We cannot blame God for the evil in many people and will use any excuse to kill .

Most devout to a religion feel that if they don't spread their religion (and do a little shoving down the throat) they feel that they aren't serving and pleasing their god. It's sick and they don't realize that the people they fight are just the same as them. Let us pretend that god is up there watching the two sides fight? Do you think he is actually cheering on which ever side believes in the real god? Hopefully not, or maybe we are just a game of Risk to god...

My question is, how did people live 900 years? How did Cain and Able have wives, were they married to their sisters? Was the earth created in 7 days or 7000 years?

OK! How on earth can you make a judgment on any book after only three pages ?
The Bible is a collection of books, story's ,poems and , recounted oral history written by many people over a very long period of time .
May I suggest you go back and give it a bit more of a read >

Obviously you need to read a lot more of the Bible so that you can get your question right. It isn't why are people killing each other over this nonsense, the correct question would be, Why aren't more people killing each other over this nonsense, and how can we get them to step it up without getting invoved ourselves?

What was your motivation for beginning to read the Bible? It sounds like it's to make fun of it, or Christians. Thanks. Well, you picked a forum where you'll get lots of support. (Y!A) How brave of you!
You will most likely have divine inspiration when you stop trying to be sarcastic and cute and really pray for understanding. It is a gift if you receive it. Otherwise, you can continue in ignorance. Your choice.

Like you, most folks start in the Old Testament. Why not start in the New Testament? My suggestion is that you read John, then Acts, then Romans...

Gives a pretty clear picture of the message from Jesus, the message to the Jews, and the message to the non-Jew.

It's nonsense to you...how sad.
