Sufi poetry is dualistic; it can be understood on two different levels. On the outer (zahiri) level, it means what it says, expressing love for a worldly lover. On the 'internal' (batini) spiritual level it has other meanings.

Here is a key which would be helpful to you in understanding these poems:

Beloved/Thou=God

Wine=Divine affection

Goblet=Persons or Means by which one finds Divine affection

Book of Verses=Quran

Wilderness=Spiritual emptiness

Meeting/Union=Mystical transcendence. Spiritual union with God so complete that one begins to see oneself as part of God (no separation remains).

Bread=Means of living

Bird=Spirit

Caged Bird=Soul trapped inside the body

Candle=Divinity

Moth (that circles the candle or burns in the flames)=Devotee of God

Dog=Faithful/patient servant of God. Accepts all misfortunes.

Sheikh=Religious establishment that doesn't understand divine love.

Hopefully that would help...
