A virus is a possibility but spyware is even more likely. Free programs are AVG (anti-virus), SpybotSD, AdAwareSe (lavasoft corp) and, from comodo.com, boclean (spyware) and an anti-virus program. If you can download some of these (only use one anti-virus) and install them reboot into safe mode then run them. You'll be surprised how much speed you pick up, assuming that was your problem.

If you're using Microsoft Windows then there is every chance that its filled to the brim with spyware, adware, viruses and other nasties.

What do your anti-virus and anti-spyware bolt-ons tell you? If you haven't already, now is a good time to run a full scan!

If you really want to be sure, just do a format & reinstall. Works every time and only takes an hour or so.

As everyone else here has already said, the most likely cause is malware. However, I will suggest a different approach to solving the problem:

http://ubuntu.com
It is that simple. Ubuntu, or and other Linux distro for that matter, cannot get malware.
