accumulated in a heap
generally things that have been unattended to. Such as, "I have a lot of work piled up." Means that that a lot of work that should have been attended to has accumulated into an unmanageable abundance.
It is often used metaphorically.

A pile is a heap of any loose material..you can make a pile of leaves, when raking the yard, a pile of sand, stones, etc...
it will look like a small hill.
To pile up, means loosely stock things , one of top of another, without worrying about the order, structure, etc...basically a messy way to stock objects,
Ind erectly, can refer to anything else, as a metaphor.
