A church can also be a place where you go to get married. I'll probably get married in one because it's a suitable place for a wedding. A lot of churches and cathedrals are designed to represent heaven and eternity- two ideas I would like to define my marriage.

I know an atheist couple that got married in one of those "Church of Elvis" chapels in Las Vegas, by an Elvis Impersonator. Does that count?

If not, how about atheists who are part of a Unitarian church and get married there? Not all churches are "places where you worship God". Even when they are, you find Boy Scouts and AA meetings taking place in some church basements, simply because they're local and have a function room.

And of course, there are plenty of people, regardless of religious belief, go get married by a judge, Justice of the Peace, get married in somebody's back yard, castles, and tons of other places.

You really need to get out more.

Nope. I guess some may, but as a general rule, you can get married by a captain or magistrate. I got married at the courthouse. The magistrate did not use any of the traditional Christian vows. Although marriage is a traditional Christian institution, I am happily married, just not under the laws of God.

Some do, yes. My wife and I were married in the home of a friend in California, in Bel Air. My first wife, who passed away, and I were married by a Justice of the Peace in Elizabeth, N.J. But for one reason or another, some atheists are married in houses of worship. Why not? Most of us are really rather orginary, agreeable, hard-working folks, you know.

Funny thing is is that "getting married" is a secular event. It is a social and not a religious agreement.

However, once you fill out the papers, then you can hire a religious person of your particular culture to perform a "marriage ceremony." But you don't have to do the church part to be married, you just have to fill out the papers and pay the fees to the State government.

Most don't unless they are marrying a Christian.

I did in spite of the fact that both me and my wife are atheists. The minister knew, he just left out the religious stuff. We did it because the church was bigger and a lot nicer than the JP's office.

Some do, to please.

I married in a lovely 6-story hotel atrium. By a justice of the peace.

My husband married both his ex wives in church. His first wife was a believer, though not a good one and he did it to appease her. His second wife was a Unitarian/ Universalist, so they married in her church. Some Unitarians are atheists, though she was not. He and I are avoided a church wedding like the plague.

Not every church is a place where you worship God.

And not every wedding takes place in a church. There are lots of civil services.
