The only difference you could probably find is the date code stamped on the case.

From what I have researched there is no difference in the 91-92 transmissions, but I found this on http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com
/1990-to-1996-dodge-dakota-2.htm
and it shows that the 92 transmission has problems upshifting in cool weather. Also it is available in 5 speed manual transmission and 3 speed automatic. The automatic is called the A500 and there was a defect in the 1991 models that when the car was put into park it would sometimes actually be in reverse causing the truck to roll away. Hope some of this helps.

Automatic transmission: If the transmission won't upshift in cool weather, it is probably due to defective cast iron seal rings in the governor drive. (1992-94)

It looks like it depends on whether you are talking about a manual or automatic and what liter engine you have.

Manual transmissions interchange from the years 87 to 91 for either 4X2 or 4X4 trucks.

Automatic transmissions, for the 5.2 liter engine, are for 1991 only. If you have a 4X4 3.9L, it interchanges for 90 & 91. A 4X2 3.9L works for 88 to 92.
