purchas a carpet puller, [at a hardware] or try heating the glue with a heat gun or large hair dryer, as you pull it loose,

There are special adhesive softeners......get to the hardware store or paint store. Cut the carpet into smaller pieces so you can work in sections. The solvest can be pretty nasty, ventilate the area well. You'll need a scraper and even something with a razor edge. Let the solvet work, don't rush it.

I hope the carpet is on tile and not wood. If on wood the solvets may not be adviseable....then it's rip what you can and sand the rest.....ugly job.

(have you tried pouring boiling water over a small area? Sometimes something as simple as that can cause the adhesive to let go enough to scrape up......obviously not for wood underfloors)

No you do not need to go to the sub floor or need to remove all old tiles from the looks of it some of that may be asbestos then you open a big can of worms what i would do is if tiles are not lifting and are still adhere to floor fill existing hole with Bondo yes Bondo body filler and then lay down backer board it is not code to lay backer board they also make a tile membrane to lay down prior to laying your tile the floor it installs with a glue and a j roller a rubber roller just like a paint roller but you can safely install your tile with backer board, membrane can only be used with fresh floor and make sure you use backer board screws these are different from any other screw do not use ordinary screws they will rust and break off then your floor becomes loose and your tile will start popping and breaking and then you get to do it all over again.
