Been there, done that...
Sometimes because of your rate, prior service, or another agreement made regarding your training you can get the pay-grade before basic training.
You DO want to get it in writing.
I went from Army to Navy with a big gap in between. The deal was I go in at E-3 and get E-4 after completing basic. It went just like that. But I had it in writing.
You'll get your pay for E-3, but you won't be allowed to wear any rank insignia or decorations until the day you graduate from boot-camp. If you do well in basic and go to the right school after, you could very well pick up E-4 a lot sooner than you think.

If it ain't in writing-it don't exist.
If you have college or JROTC or some other reason, he may be offering you E3, but make him put it in writing before you sign.
Get a guaranteed school too, even if you have to wait a year to go. PUT IT IN WRITING so that if later they say it's FuLL or you don't qualify, you can GET OUT of the NAVY with a good conduct discharge.
Try photography or medical or something you can USE in the real world. Ex-ray tech is great. The school is great.
If you speak 2 languages, go to language school. How about heavy equipment operator-big bucks on the outside.
Don't let them sign you up for HULL TECh-cleaning out big giant toilets,--or defusing bombs--you will come home dead.)
What year we talking-Aug 21 is Tuesday.
PS You will get paid the same in boot camp as everyone else and then get a bonus check they don't get-It is a nice little bonus.
THEY NEED YOU more than you need them.
Good luck--DUCK!

When I started boot, I was an E3. The reason is because I had a college degree going in. If you have other education under your belt or equivalent experience, then you can go to boot as an E3, but it DOES have to be in writing, or you won't get paid the E3 rate. Tell him to put it in writing...if he says that it doesn't need to be in the contract, don't sign. NEVER take a recruiters word for it.

Well since I am prior service and went from the Army, into the Navy, with n advance in pay grade i also had to have that in my contract so u better believe it has to be in ur contract because if it is not it won't bee worth nothing.
Listen all that recruiter is trying to do is get u to sign up and meet his quota and is talking a bunch of bull to you get that E-3 promise in writing else you will not get that once u enter boot camp so be sure to do it before u raise ur right hand ok,and tell that recruiter to stop B.S.-U its that simple.

Being ex-military I would tell you not to believe this recruiter. Never believe anything unless it's in writing.
When the Berlin Wall went down, the government decided that we didn't need such a large standing force so they got rid of everyone that they could through incentives such as "early outs" and early retirements, or just plain forcing them out if they messed up (such as failing weigh in's). They lost a lot of the lower ranks that way and became top heavy with senior NCO's. NOW, the armed forces are short handed and they're all recruiting like crazy.

Technically they arent supposed to lie to you but they do.
If you haven't had rotc or gone to military school, then he is probably lying to get you to sign.
If you do sign with him, make sure its in your contract.
Maybe go to another recruiter. Do NOT say anything about the other recruiter or what he told you.

it MUST be written into the contract.
there are other ways besides JROTC or referring.. mostly having college credits or completing PQS before shipping.
