Yes generally all ones that open a shop have to pay, but i don't know how much exactly, but i'm sure it's a great sum. Anyway if u don't pay they 'll set fire to your shop( 1 week ago an industry of varnishes exploded)...i hope to attend a foreign university, may be there...hope to have no problems with the language...

I'm part Italian (still have family members around Trieste) so I love the country and the culture...However, I think the people in Italy could use some guidance in how to treat foreigners, even their own countrymen for that matter. Moreover, the cities are downright filthy (more so in the south than in the north), which okay...I know they are old cities but still, there must be a way to maintain a clean space...show some pride in your country. As well, if I'm going to pay 10 euros for a bowl of pasta, I don't want it to be some frozen crap that hasn't even been properly warmed up in the microwave - that's what I was served in Rome, in the heart of the city! Come on...
In any case, just like in France, I found people to be more friendly and honest outside the main city hubs and that's what I would go back to when I visit Italy again.
EDIT: P.S. You're not serious about the mafia bit are you?

I love the place, especially Rome....but its expensive. I just came back this morning from Rome. I saw a flat for sale in the area of the Termini....600,000 Euros and its on the 3rd floor area of 107 Sq. Mtrs. I call that expensive.
The good thing is the Buses and Metro...a 4 Euros ticket and you can run around all day.
Plenty of places to see and some shops are quite cheap...bought a couple of photographer type waistcoats a 2 Euros each. Bargains are there but sometimes you have to look real hard. I go to Italy about 4 or 5 times a year. My son goes to Rome about 12 times a year, so its not new.

Napoli, really? I went there a few months ago and loved it, though I can understand where you are coming from. Napoli is not the cleanest city... but very interesting. Americans are in awe of Italy because most of them only see the tourist side- most of these responses have probably only been to Florence or Sorrento, maybe spent a day in Rome. Every country has it's problems.
That is so interesting about the mafia... does EVERY person really have to pay or is it just some businesses? How much? What if they don't pay?

The first time I traveled to Italy, I thought I would be very disappointed, but was I wrong! It has become one of my favorite destinations. I stay out of the politics and just enjoy the history and beauty of the country.

Italy's great. Gorgeous country, great people (especially the Neopolitans and the Florentines), great food, wonderful culture, and wonderful attitude to life.
Too many problems? Show us a country that DOESN'T have too many problems!
