I agree with his statement, he was certainly a great poet and is considered the greatest literary light in the German language. However, I have never heard that he was a theologian, scientist or painter.

I can certainly see where he's coming from, but I don't know if I agree with him 100%. I believe that those who don't believe in an afterlife or similar concept are still able to be redeemed if they so choose to accept redemption. It's not like their cases are hopeless and they are destined to die. They have the option to choose life if they want.

I disagree. As there is no credible evidence of an afterlife, it makes the best sense to live as though this were the only lifetime we are to have. Live to the fullest and build for the future, even though you personally will not be there to see it.
