Perhaps he's a fan of mini electronics, lol. If you care anything at all about photography or just taking good memorable photos, that camera won't do if it doesn't even have a zoom lens. How are you going to take sharp pictures? I'm afraid you'll just have to hurt his feelings.
I disagree with what other people said about materialism and what not. That camera isn't even good for practical use if one has any expectations to take decent pictures (although my definition of decent pictures is subjective). I would be embarrassed just holding it in privacy.
I mean, when I read the reviews of that camera, some of them were from parents buying it for their 8 or 10 year old. If you're a teenager, I can definitely understand why you would feel embarrass with such a camera. I would rather not bring a camera.

The most expensive and sophisticated DSLR will never ever take a great - much less good - photograph. In fact it will do nothing until the human mind directs it. Its the photographer, NOT the camera.
Use it and when you've exhausted its possbilities and squeezed every last pixel out of what its capable of then think about a new camera. This may take longer than you think.

Stop being such a twit!
Apparently you are intimidated by the size of your friends cameras. Why not show them that size doesn't matter and take better pictures than your friends. My son just bought a Canon 40D DSLR and has "Canon" tatooed to his leg, but he still takes crappy pictures. I can do a better job with my 5MP Fuji FinePix.
Either that or the camera isn't good enough for you. In this case... you're just a spoiled twit who needs to go and buy his own camera and stop worrying about any hurt feelings because you are more worried about your self image.

A lot of times, other people have better things compared to what we have and getting embarassed is not the way to go. You are luckier than your friends who have better cameras as yours was gifted to you by a caring person. You are right that your brother-in-law could get hurt by your buying a new one immediately. You could wait for a while out of respect for his feelings and then get yourself another one but if you were to go anywhere with your brother-in-law use his gift to you, as it will prove to him that you appreciate his gift and his thoughtfulness. Some of the good cameras do not have the zoom feature, they could be used for excellent close-range photos.

I don't think it looks bad. I've wanted a digital camera for ages so I think your quite lucky. And if yours friends don't like it then they have to much spare time on their hands if they need to think up criticism about it. Have fun with it!

If your friends laugh at your camera, they aren't your friends. There is nothing embarrassing about that camera, HP makes good cameras.
If they laugh at your camera, you should take out the nice video ipod and show that off :)
