Everyone gave appropriate answers, but in case you were looking for something fun, here are a couple of things I've heard others do (or at least claimed to have done):

*Ask the called to hold. Put the phone down on the counter and go about your normal business.

*Hand the phone to your barely speaking child (2 or 3 years old), and let them deal with the caller.

Note: I don't actually recommend doing these things. I just posted them for giggles.

Tell them to cease and desist IN WRITING. They'll just keep calling if you tell them verbally to stop.

As I'm sure you're aware, bill collectors can be VERY aggressive in their efforts--because they get a commission off every penny they collect.

Do a search online for "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act" and you should find the text of a Federal law you can quote chapter and worse in your letter to shut the collectors up for good!

Well, you can pay the debt, that's the easiest and best way to deal with them.

Or, if you don't have the money or aren't going to pay them, you take down their name and phone number and company, and you tell them not to call anymore. Then you write them a letter claiming that they are harassing you in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

You should go through all the debts that are being collected and send them letters asking them to verify the debt, and if they fail to send you verification then you can have them remove the item from your credit report.

If they keep calling you after you have notified them to stop, then you can sue them.

We're going through a "settlement" with our credit card companies and they keep calling usually every 15 minutes.. They have even called my husbands work, family members and our neighbors.. It's very, very frustrating and annoying. If you feel that the calls are harrassing you can contact UCAN United Consumer Advocacy Network- you can contact them at 1-877-462-8226 or e-mail at info@ucan.net.. They will help you stop or decrease the harassing calls... Good luck

I have told them that i'm not at that phone number anymore. Or, I just ignore their phone call.

Like the other answer said, give them a little bit of a payment...it usually makes them shut up for about 3 months or so.

What you can do is tell them that you can't pay the whole thing right now, and ask if you can work something out. They already know that you're in a financial bind or else they wouldn't be calling you.

Say "STOP CALLING ME.'

I've heard that if you say that, they aren't allowed to anymore, or you can sue them for harrassment.

I could be wrong, but it's worth a try, eh?

Also, try sending in a payment, even a small one. They usually only call because they haven't gotten ANYTHING.
