Any area where there are not a lot of people around at night is a bad place to leave your car at night. Industrial areas, near parks and cemeteries etc. Every boro has it's hot spots. The best place would be a residential neighborhood in a low crime area. I'd pick somewhere more low-rise since neighbors know each other and are more suspicious of strange people trying to break into cars. Use a club to deter theft and never leave any possesions visible in the car and you should be alright. If you have an aftermarket stereo it's got a pretty good chance of being stolen.

ANY roadside within the city limits of New York is a bad place to vacate your car... it only takes about 10 minutes to strip it down and cart off the important parts. I've seen MANY along what they call the MAJOR DEACON (which is Route 87) where there are pull of emergency spots---in the Bronx mostly....

I think it depends on what borough you are talking about. In Manhattan is probably safe to leave your car in most places. It more likely depends on the type of car and how long you leave it in one spot.

More of a nusiance would be people breaking into your car for any valuables, money, radio, etc.

Car thieves don't work by location, they work by the car model. If they need 2004 Nissans, for example, they'll go out and get some.
