You are an employee who has just discovered that an e-mail message you thought you sent to your close friend at work was sent to an entire department. In this message you disclose the fact that you believe your boss is having an extramarital affair with someone else at the company. If your boss find out, can she fire you for sending the message? Dose it matter whether your news is true?

I believe that you posted this in the wrong section. However, yes, I do believe they have the right to fire you. You are not suppose to be using company e-mail to talk about personal things, and I think it is a fireable offense. Also, whether it is true or not, you just lessened the boss in the eyes of their employees.

You've definitly put her in a crappy situation, I'm sure shes even more embarrassed then you. What I would do is send out another e-mail to everyone that the last one wasn't true(whether it is or not,) and that you feel pretty bad about it, too. If your boss confronts you look down at the floor and sincerely apologize for letting her down. That should keep you from gettin fired! =] If she still fires you, which YES she could, then at least you can say you tried, and that shows ambition! GOOD LUCK!

Some companies will fire you and your boss. Adultery is not tolerated by companies that have an image to uphold.

My first cousin was fired because of a lie and so was my son.

Spreading gossip destroys people.

Only if there is a policy in place against personal e-mails.
On the other hand I would find a way to fire you for wasting company time with Gossip.

Never send anything you wouldn't want everyone to see in an email at work.
Your company owns those emails. Proven in court cases.
Some corporations have software that reads your emails.
Don't be a fool and think what you write has any measure of privacy.
And it doesn't matter if it's true or not.
I'd polish up my resume if I were you.
And then put it online.

Did you use a computer which belonged to the company for this personal message? If so, you're fired!

It is called "Libel" and you could be sued for it. If your company has a policy against gossip or personal e-mails, you can be fired for that. Keep your head down and your mind on your own job. No more gossip.

If you sent it on a company computer, yes she can------misuse of company property (she can also fire you for using the company computer, on company time to ask this question of Y answers).

More than likely, you are an "at will" employee anyway, so technically, they can fire you for any reason they want (as long as it doesn't violate your civil rights).

But to answer your question--you committed insubordination. Big word meaning "get your resume together".

your most likely going to be terminated, I'd be looking for a new job. Remember that you, you can be terminated at anytime for any reason or no reason at all. BAD mistake and poor work ethics to be a gossip.
