Long Beach, Seal Beach, Newport beach, Dana Point, Crystal Cove (awsome), San Clemente, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Big Bear, Oceanside, San Diego, Carlsbad, Kern River (Very FUN!!!!), Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia Nat Forest, Ventucopa, Ojai, Lompoc, Pismo Beach. I have been to all these places. All of them are close & fun!!!!

All your other answer's have good ideas. But many are more than your 2 hours away. Try Laguna Beach. This small artist community has it all. Great beaches that are really beautiful, (many commercials and movies filmed there)., Superb restaurants, good night life, Lots of Gallery's and its close to the other beach areas, the airport and Disney land. It has a Mediterranean feel and has great hotels for just about any price that you could want, from inexpensive to very pricey. All in all a good weekend spot.

San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs and Big Bear are about 1.5 - 2 hours drive away.
I'd head to Santa Barbara personally.

LA has lots of attractions including theme parks like Disneyland, Knots Berry Farm, Raging Waters and Universal Studios. Other activities for you to consider include Griffith Observatory or a trip to Hollywood. Either way you are sure to have a fun trip.
