I'm not an atheist. I'm a Christian, and I have no problem with the American Civil Liberties Union. I know several staunch Christians who are longtime ACLU members. The organization supports the right of people to worship and/or express themselves as they wish. Sure, they've defended the far left, but they've also defended the KKK. They'll defend a Satanist, or your local Pentecostal minister. Unpopular speech must still be free speech, and in that respect, I think they've done a reasonably good job of representing both sides of the socio-political spectrum.

(In response to Maria) The ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Union. It's an organization that has dedicated itself to either bringing or defending cases relating to constitutional issues. It has taken on cases and clients that are highly controversial in the name of protecting broader civil liberties. Therefore, they are a favorite punching bag in the US.

I see the ACLU as a defender of everyone's rights.

The ACLU defedns civil liberties. They are as likely to defend a child's right to pray in school as they are to back a lawsuit against displaying the 10 commandments on public property.

As an atheist, I think the nutjobs at the ACLU go a little overboard at times.

The American Civil Liberties Union is a legal aid organization in the USA that represents unpopular, under-represented clients involved in legal action. Their sole intent is to preserve CIVIL LIBERTIES in the face of mob movements against them. They have defended gun-rights organizations, neo-Nazis and many other people and organizations abhorrent to liberal sensibilities. The reason they are branded as a "liberal", "communist" or "atheist" group is that such people are most likely to have their civil right trampled by populist hate groups.

It is primarily Jewish at a leadership level, although this is more conspicuous with local chapters than the national organization. Jews have followed a policy of favoring secularization since about the 1870's,beginning in France. They do in fact tend to view Christianity as an enemy, although this is not readily apparent since they bear no malice toward Christians as individuals, only to organized Christianity which they bitterly assail in books and articles. The ACLU became dominated by Jews in the 1970's and since that time has done much to erode the status of Christianity, which they feel is in their interests; they therefore ally themselves with atheists on grounds of what they see as political expediency. They have a mutual animosity to Christianity.

Just a defence organization for all american civil liberties. It is not just about race or religion. They have found themselves both suing for and against the same organization on more than one occasion.
