It depends on the breed. Smaller dogs who are sort of hyper (like Jack Russell terriers) do well with harnesses, which are the ones that go around their tummy and neck. However, bigger, stronger dogs, like my English bulldog Manny, do much better with a collar that just goes around their neck, because they carry most of their strength in their chests, which means that with a harness they'd just be pulling you all over the place.

Personally I liked the harness (tummy/neck) when my puppy was really small but now she has graduated to a neck collar and is doing great. If the puppy doesn't walk well on a leash I like the harness better because it doesn't put all the force on the neck. Just make sure it fits where you can slide two fingers in it easily but not too loose where it will get caught on something.

I really think it comes down to personal preferance, but I like just the regular dog collar personally. The other is not bad, but when I have a puppy I like them to get used to the dog collar and start learning how to give to the pressure when you are leading on a leash. From my experiences it makes a huge differance to start when they are puppies than changing them to a collar when they are older and not already have the experience with the collar. Then again as was mentioned earlier by someone that smaller hyper dogs do better with harnesess, that may be true, I have not personally owned a smaller dog like a terrier, all the dogs I have personally owned have ranged from 50 pounds to 150 pounds.

I like a harness, I have a dog that likes to chase things, bicycles, motorcycles and such. On a standard collar he
tries as hard as he can to rip my arm out to go on the chase.

Our dog trainer gave us a gift when he graduated, called an
easy walk harness. Just having it on seems to have transformed him from pulling too following, plus if he tries to chase something it stops him on the spot without hurting my arm. If I go back to the collar he goes right back to pulling so I am staying with the harness for now. I like it so much I have it also on my puppy.

regular collars are good for larger breed, adult dogs; but all toy breeds as well as puppies should be walked with a harness because the pressure on their fragile necks can cause lots of damage. good luck
