I have an Arcam AVR350......in a word, awesome. It is according to what circles you run in, but I have heard this referred to a "mid-fi" at some audiophile sites. Funny, a $2500 dollar piece of equipment to some may seem a little too much and others not enough. I looked at others from the Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo and HK camp as I have had all those at one time or another. None sounded as good as my old Luxman gear(or the Arcam, obviously), which I still have. Until I hit the lottery I don't think I can justify $5000 monoblock amps and $20,000 speakers that would allow me entrance to the "real" Hi-Fi world. I can't afford the wires and interconnects some use. Can't go wrong with Arcam IMHO.

HI. Because home theater has become more sophisticated over the years the demands for audio realism have increased so as to approximate the experience of sound and vision in the Cinema to our equipment at home.Because of the improvements of sound in a Cinema.there are many decoding systems which have found their way into the home theater Receiver which has become a complicated device which some people find hard to navigate. Now since all this decoding information is crambed into a Receiver which houses a Preamp stage a Tuner and five or more Power Amplifiers all using a single power supply. The needs of the Power Amp section affect the Preamp section(not good) .The result is that Receivers are not as smooth, effortless, open and full sounding as separate components.
I have always put sound quality first when it comes to enjoying home theater. We already have great video displays and projectors but in most situations the sound does not match the video in equal resolution. You probably know that speakers are all different in the sound they reproduce. They all add their own ''sound" (colouration ) to the sound they are producing. It is the same with amplifiers .

So, my advise is to listen to as many as you can in your price range. There is no other way to do it. If you take the advise of another person you may be lucky ,but when you are forking out a fair bit of money you do not want to make a wrong decision.Brand names do not come into it.There are good and bad models from all the manufacturers of Receivers. So trust your ears.,that is all you have to go by.

Yes, Arcam is generally in the mid to higher end receiver class.

Very good receivers indeed. A bit pricey though. You are looking at around $3000 per receiver.

The other good brands that are not as pricey are:

Yamaha
Pioneer (Elite and non-elite)

I am familiar with the Pioneer receivers. They are generally well built and they should please most people. Speacially if you don't have $3000 to get one of those Arcam or any other higher end receivers.

i have a denon avr 2307-and its the dogs cajoneys!!. having said this arcam are the tops as well-you wouldn't go far wrong with either make. some of the higher end yamaha and marantz kit can be impressive though i have never been impressed with sony's offerings in this market. look to pay £750 up for a model of decent spec and quality.
