Does Epilepsy And Schizophrenia Run Through Genes?

Ive recently found out that my mum's cousin [my 2nd cousin] died from a epileptic fit and that my other 2 2nd cousins [my dads cousins] both suffered from Schizophrenia but I have no idea how bad it is/was.

I was wondering if there was any chance that I could get it? And, are these conditions that you are born with or can they develop over time? As far as I know, nobody else in my family suffers from any other mental illnesses.

Thankyou.

How high of a risk would it be that I would get either or both of these conditions?

I can't say much about Schizophrenia, but in some cases epilepsy can be genetically linked. The odds of a gene that affects your chance of having epilepsy are greater if the mother is a carrier, but even then it may causes the odds of have having epilepsy to increase by only about 15%.

It also depends on the type of epilepsy and what causes it. Obviously if someone has seizures because they were smacked on the head, you're not going to inherite that. There are some diseases and conditions that cause seizures, and some of those can be inherited.

With schizophrenia it seems to be similar; you don't inherit the actualy condition, but rather a higher chance of it happening. Again though, that varies from cases to cases as does just about everything related to your brain.

Epilepsy and schizophrenia are both not single easily identifiable disorders but are a spectrum of disorders. Some types of both are considered to have a genetic component but no one specific gene definitively causing symptoms has been identified. Schizophrenia and epilepsy are not related.

I don't think there is much chance that you will get either of the two classes of disorders. For more info on the two conditions just type in "epilepsy" and "schizophrenia" into Yahoo! web search and a number of links comes up. Wikipedia in both cases is a good overview.

In any case many people with both disorders live a happy and near normal life. Good luck, good health, peace and love!

Both epilepsy and schizophrenia have strong genetic components, but the two conditions are not, themselves, related.

Yes there is a possibility that you could contract either one, particularly given the genetic link. Hopefully, though, you won't. No sense in worrying about what may or may not come to pass.

The Bible differentiates among Demon ownership and mental incapacity and hindrance. There also are many scriptures that straight consult with melancholy. Matthew four:24 24And his status went for the duration of all Syria: they usually introduced unto him all ill individuals that had been considering divers sicknesses and torments, and the ones which have been possessed with devils, and the ones which have been LUNATIC, and people who had the palsy; and he healed them. Matthew 17:15 15Lord, have mercy on my son: for he's lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fireplace, and oft into the water Proverbs 18:14 14The spirit of a person can undergo his ailment, But as for a damaged spirit who can undergo it? Proverbs 15:thirteen 13A pleased middle makes a pleased face, But while the center is gloomy, the spirit is damaged. Proverbs Proverbs12:25 25 Anxiety in a person's middle weighs it down, But a well phrase makes it comfortable. This scripture is relatively humorous: one million Samuel 21:12-14 12David took those phrases to middle and extensively feared Achish king of Gath. 13So he disguised his sanity earlier than them, and acted insanely of their arms, and scribbled at the doorways of the gate, and permit his saliva run down into his beard. 14Then Achish mentioned to his servants, "Behold, you notice the person behaving as a madman. Why do you deliver him to me? There are many extra such scriptures handling those problems esp. inside the guide of Proverbs and Pauls writings (e.g. Philippians four:7)
