Well, this one is for Doberman experts. We just got a new 4 year old male into our rescue. His front shoulder and elbow joints seem a little more wideset than the other males. Like almost a little bowed when he stands. It isn't major and in fact I didn't even notice until a few days after he came in and he doesn't seem bothered at all. Is this normal or is it something that can cause him problems? I just don't want to adopt him out without first making sure that he will be okay.
The vet didn't seem too concerned, but I just wanted to check with you Dobie people.
I can get you a picture if you'd like me to email it to you. I'm not talented enough to put them online!!

Hmmm... I would like to see a picture if you have one. I am not sure exactly what you are seeing, but I suspect it's just bad breeding.. Probably won't cause him problems til he is older and then because he has had more wear and tear than a dog with a proper shoulder, he might feel it in old age.. I turned my email on if you want to send me a pic..
Thx

Well, I am not a Doberman expert or any type of expert for that matter. However, I do know when a pups legs are growing there is on occasion the fact that one bone will grow faster than the other causing the leg to bow. I'll look it up for you and get back. OK, nutrition seems to be what contributes to this in most cases or lack there of should I say. I guess your dog wasn't fed properly at the crucial time when his legs needed it most.

It could simply be poor forequarters structure or it could be an indication of elbow dysplasia. You can have the elbows x-rayed by the vet to determine if they are degenerative or not and if so, it can be painful for the dog and might require intervention. If it is simply poor structure, there isn't much to be done except know that it can lead to structural breakdown and degeneration of the joints so it would be good to place him in a home where the people don't plan on excessively exercising him or having him do jumps - the less pounding on structurally unsound joints, the better. Good luck and hope he gets a nice home soon.

Why do people waste time with answers like the one above? Ugh.. Thumbs down for you.
I would think if the vet doesn't find any cause for concern regarding the issue then I think you could feel secure in adopting him out comfortably. It could have just been a conformational flaw as a puppy due to one reason or another (and maybe that's why he's ended up in a rescue situation to begin with)?
It might require a little more TLC and precaution like joint maintenance and making sure he stays in shape (more weight on the joints could cause more problems) but it doesn't sound like anything other than maybe an unsightly physical abberation.

Hi Shanna, If the vet has no concerns I wouldn't either. I have never had a Doberman with this problem. Maybe he just had a deficiency when he was young.
For the #1 poster, with an answer like that do you think anyone here will ever take any of your advice. I hope not!!!
You probably know jack squat about Dobies any how!

I have always been a doberman owner, and have breed them once. Its sounds to me like you have a warlock or king doberman. They are not considered breeding stock because they are bigger than the breed standard, but all of mine were warlocks and I prefer them to the smaller ones, they just look more majestic to me. Some people say there is no such thing as Warlock but I've seen the difference in the dogs first hand.
