I spent quite a time on here asking and answering questions over the summer, and will probably take a long hiatus now that school is starting back up. Looking into the perspectives of different people on this site has done a few things for me. Although I do not view the regulars as an accurate sample of the population, I've seen how different our race can be in terms of beliefs and views on reality. My own perspective has been further shaped and supported. I've read from some very wise answerers who reason for themselves, but far more from bigoted and close-minded individuals who willingly follow others mindlessly. Both have made somewhat of a difference on me. What about you?

I just look on this site as an opportunity to be exposed to more viewpoints than I would find in my little face to face world. Some people here are patient and kind in their replys and others are more shrill. My personal views have not changed but I am still open to the possibility that someday they might.
I do think there is a slight improvement in the quality of questions and answers but the operative word is 'Slight".
There are fewer people here than one would think.
I most enjoy reading the thoughtful posts and dislike the one liner slams. Sometimes I thumbs down them.
My motto is to each his own... just let me be.

It hasn't changed my outlook on the world, but it has had an influence on my beliefs, mostly confirming what I already believe. I've participated in some similar message boards, so there wasn't a lot that surprised me.

In the end, it's futile to argue with blind faith. If you're arguing with someone who readily abandons logic for faith, and you approach life logically, you're not debating from the same understanding. Honestly, I don't know why people of faith debate at all. They can have any belief they want and then scramble to pull some obscure doctrine that might be able to be loosely interpreted as supporting their view. Two faithers can battle out these interpretations for decades without ever settling it. At least scientists make progress.

I have come to see a whole different side of mankind on here..People are very close minded and follow leaders of their Church without question..I have seen people who profess to be Christians behave very ugly and unloving towards others who question their beliefs. I was a little bit surprised to find there are so many who don't believe in God as well..and to see the anger that comes from them as well..

Yes, I've learned a lot and have been influenced both positively and negatively. It bothers me that some people are sooooo blind to logic and reason that it saddens me.

On the other hand, there's some really smart, caring, reasonable people out there that, hopefully, will make a difference in the world.

It is sad though, I agree with you. I see more closed-mindedness and circular reasoning more than I do level-headedness.

It's made a little bit of a difference.

I always knew that there were a lot of good, wise, and sincere people in the world, who are willing to think and to listen, but that they're overshadowed a lot of the time by the loud-mouth losers who come around just to push people's buttons.

That is proven out here, a kind of microcosm of the real world.

It has made me a little more hopeful that there really are good people out there. It's just a matter of trying to hear them over the farting sounds of trolls speaking.

no one will ever change what i believe in. i can only tell people what i believe in and then leave the rest up to the individual and vise versa. i love reading about people's different opinions and beliefs. i learn something new every time i come on here. reality is that people are going to be hateful and vindictive in the real world so why would they change on the internet. this place truly shows people's true color's. why else would people be rude on the internet and then be nice to others when they step out their house? if your ugly on here...then that's who you really are. no matter what you believe in. ugly is ugly and sadly...that is never going to change.

I would agree with you... the variety of perspectives from so many differing belief systems has been a great catalyst for new ideas. I have found compassion in voices I didn't expect it from, and idiocy from others.

Mostly, I have been made more aware of my own reactions to views I don't agree with, and I try to play with ideas more...

I sometimes forget -- surrounded as I am by great thinkers and scientists at my work and by my non-believer peers on the weekends -- just what a bunch of dim-bulbs middle America is in some places. This section helps remind me of this simple but painful truth...
