I've never bought a cat. I don't really understand people who do. There's so many strays it's like buying apples when you have an apple tree in your backyard.
One of my cats is about 10 now and we got her when she was tiny. A friend of my dad's found her in the rode with a broken leg crying one night.
I have another cat that's a bit over a year that I acquired while working at a pets store. People like to drop of animals at pet stores and a woman brought in a box full of newborn kittens that she found in her backyard.
I bottle fed and raised all of them, kept the runt and gave the rest to good homes for free.
Before either of these cats, I had the sweetest, most adorable Tabby that I found on Thanksgiving wondering around. Unfortunately, he didn't have a tag (so stupid, I know) so about 3 years after we got him he disappeared. I can only hope that some other loving person picked him up.
Anyway, my point is, purebred shmurebred. Just go rescue one.
Cats are way different from dogs, and I love them both. I have a 12 year old golden so she and the older cat pretty much grew up together.
You have to "own" one to really appreciate them. They don't require training and even seem appalled by the idea of it. But the wonderful part is that they generally don't need it!

Cat breeders usually think their cats are special because they've taken the time to breed them, which in some breeds isn't easy. Take Savannah's for example which are VERY hard to breed and often have genetic problems since they are still a new breed. Having recently adopted 2 Savannah's I enjoy them but they definately do way more damage than "REgular" cats. I have 3 other regular cats which are pretty low maintenance. So I prefer mixed breeds, but there is that desire in many people to have a wild cat, so exotics are the way to go to take care of that.

There is an "akc thing" for cats. It's called TICA. If you do a web search you should be able to locate the site.

Good question- it seems that most cats I see are just little "mutt" cats that come from the pound. However, I know there are some foofy cat breeds, like Himalayan, Assyrian, Siamese, etc. that are purebred and cost a LOT. I think those cats have papers like purebred dogs do, but I don't know if it's AKC or some other cat-specific organization.

If I had to buy a cat (which I hope I never do), I'd just pick up a cute little gray guy from the pound.

I don't show cats personally, but people do show them in contests and such. A cat may not be considered special just because 'its tiny' but maybe it has distinct markings and whatnot.

I'd rather buy a mixed breed cat. Not only are they A LOT cheaper (purebreds can be over $500.00), like dogs, they tend to have better personalities.

No, the cat world isn't like the dog world.. Cat's aren't as popular. Dog's are; 'loyal, loving, companions' cats are 'more rebelious, more independant and more .. well more prissy.' .. But it depends on the cat.. My cat's Killer and Beautiful, are very loving and loyal.. and some dogs are rebelious and independant.. I don't think the breed of a cat matters, but I would preffer Ragdoll.

just like dogs if you want a breed...long hair ,short hair ,coon cats, babydolls, siamese etc....breeds are very "pissy" personality wise but I've found stray tabbys are very sweet & personable from the pound vs finding a stray on the street..street kittens/cats can be to "wild" to domesticate...
