I would start by saying, "I would like to encourage you to...
So many times people start jumping down the other person's throat which puts a person in defense mode and no logical thinking is going to occur at that point. So I nicely encourage them to look at the issue at hand from a different point of view, or to seek more information on the subject. All of us have our own subtle or not-so-subtle prejudices based on incorrect or incomplete information, but we should realize that others do too.
With that in mind, we should reach out to the person as a mentor in that particular situation. Letting emotions get involved is useless. Kindness is the only way to change a person's heart.
Here's a story from my faith that illustrates what the Muslim's behavior should be in this regard.
There was a man who came to the Prophet's mosque and urinated in it. The companions got very upset and some of them wanted to attack the man for such a flagrantly disrespectful act, but the Prophet restrained them and told them to let him finish. After that, he called the man to the side and calmly told him that the mosque was not the place for that. He then had some people clean the spot. That was it. He taught that if you approach the people with harshness, they will never listen to you.

Deal with it calmly. If they can not remain calm and give an intelligent reason as to why they are provoking offense, then it's simply better to just leave them alone. They obviously only live off of the chaos they create by acting in such a manner and it's a waste of my time and energy to entertain such people.

Forgiveness
but no one can offend the Truth, for the Truth is beyond being offended.
Go beyond faith, religion and offense, Dr. G and DO this:
Have UnConditional Love and Peace by accomplishing this:
Create Your Relationship with Our Creator.
UnConditional Love and Peace is the only answer.

Either the offense is not worth worrying about in which case you walk away and ignore it.
Or you come back at them so fast and so hard they have no idea what hit them.

Hit them with a brick...oh wait, that was Mark Twain. lol
I just try to confound them with intelligence. Usually the people who start name calling do so because they have no real argument.

kill them with kindness, ignore that person if it's someone on your job - just remember that you don't have to go home with that person. on the flip side nicely ask that person "excuse me have i done or said something wrong to you?" do not mirror that persons reaction simply do the opposite to the best of your ability.
