What should I expect?

I had a thyroidectomy last year for a suspicious biopsy result (turned out to be cancer). In the grand scheme of surgeries, it wasn't that bad. I was in the hospital for 2 days. You'll be uncomfortable after the surgery but it's not too bad. It feels like you have a giant lump in your throat and is very sore to swallow for about 3 days. I never needed to take any prescription pain meds, though they offered them. Within about a week I felt back to normal. I have a 2 inch scar on my neck but it's very thin and light colored, not that noticeable.

Because it was cancer I also had radioactive iodine after. And I take Levoxyl every day. Luckily I haven't had any side effects from that.

Good luck - try not to worry too much!

No problem...no pain involved...you'll need to take synthroid every morning the rest of your life...inexpensive med, especially generic. Get your blood tests annually after your endocronologist adjusts your dosage after the surgery...do not worry. it is very simple.
