I haven't cut them before, but his back nails are really long. Also, isn't there something to put on the nail in case you trim to low and it bleeds?

First of all only cut the tip so you don't have to worry about cutting low. Think about your fingernails. Pet stores carry special nail trimmers for cats. They are circular. They work great.

An alternative to trimming an inside cat's nails is Soft Paws. They are nail caps that you put on the claws (kind of like fake nails) that prevent them from injuring you when they jump off your lap, etc. I'm looking to get them for our cat. They have lots of pictures on their website of cats (and a separate site for dogs) wearing them and completely oblivious to them! They fall off in about a month and have to be replaced. So cost is a factor, too. But definitely worthy of investigation.

I usually cut off only a little bit so it doesn't bleed. If your cat has clear nails, you can look on the side of them and see the blood vessels. I never cut into the blood vessels and usually just cut enough to get the sharp point off. You can get that stuff that stops the bleeding in pet stores. Just beware that if you cut it to where it starts bleeding you have to be careful because it can get infected easily!

I've trimmed my barn cats' nails before when they were very long. Didn't stop them from hunting mice, etc. I usually grabbed them about every 2 months or so and did the front nails.

Hold your kitty still, and only clip the see-through parts of the nail, where there is no feeling. That way you won't hurt the kitty, and they can't scratch you, but they can still use their claws for other things. Keep him inside if you do do this. And I am glad you are going a humane route.
PS< if you do the see thorugh part, it wont bleed. Yes, they do sell a neosporin for cats if you do make them bleed, but you really have to go wrong to do that.

Don't trim your cat's claws if it goes outside. Its claws are its only decent protection. If it stays inside, try trimming them when the cat is quiet and is sleeping or dozing maybe in your lap. If you're careful the cat won't even know you're doing it. I use a large size toe-nail clipper and it works fine and is inexpensive.

I use the Bamboo Guillotine (I know, scary name) Nail trimmer(http://www.entirelypets.com/bcatgunatrst.html). It has Styptic (powder to stop bleeding) in a little contatiner to dip the nail in if you cut too low and there is bleeding. It has easy to follow instructions so you don't have too worry about doing it wrong.

It's not exactly fun for the cat, but a treat afterward will cheer him/her up!

Good luck!

Only but where the nail is clear (neat the tips) when you start to see black and opaque white you cannot cut there.

If you are nervous about it start off by only cutting off the sharp tips.

You can always google it and find hundreds of articles on it with pictures and tips to help guide you through the process or if you are really concerned and scared about hurting your cat then you can either go to your vet to help teach you or go to your groomer to help teach you.
