You could put some chopped nuts into the batter, if no one is allergic to nuts, and then they'd be similar to brownies. Or add some chocolate chips to the batter and they'd be extra chocolatey. Or white chocolate chips for a surprise inside.

I make these alot for my son's class parties. They are filled cupcakes. You can even dye the filling with food coloring to match the closest holiday - Halloween, Fourth of July, Christmas, etc. Also, you can use any kind of cake mix - doesn't necessarily have to be chocolate.
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), or to the temperature recommended on the cake mix package.
Prepare chocolate cake mix according to package directions, but do not bake. In separate bowl cream together cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg until well blended, then stir in chocolate chips.
Line cupcake tins with cupcake papers. Fill 2/3 full with chocolate cake batter. Add 1 teaspoon cream cheese mixture to the center, and top with more cake batter.
Bake according to package directions for cupcakes. Cool and frost with chocolate or cream cheese frosting.

These are great.
Cut and remove a strawberry (coned) shaped portion of cupcake from the top of each cupcake, leaving about 1/2 to 1-inch of cake in the bottom. Stuff each cake with a strawberry and cover with a little bit of cake. Spoon and spread icing over the top of the cupcakes. Sprinkle with green sanding sugar. Top with small mint leaves or candied leaves.

follow the directions in the cupcake package then try spreading this on top of your cupcakes:
mix together 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter, 1/2 cup cream cheese until smooth, add 2 tablespoons honey, 2 teaspoons orange juice and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or a sprinkle of vanilla extract.
