Not necessarily a fictional character, but a composite one, grafted together from (possibly real) Jewish rebels (such as the unnamed "Egyptian" mentioned by Josephus who gathered his forces in the Garden of Gethsemane and was arrested and killed by the Romans), Greek Hellenism, Egyptian mythology, and Old Testament prophecies.
But the evidence that Jesus did not actually exist is quite overwhelming. Why? Because outside of Justin Martyr, none of the early apologists had ever heard of him.
Theophilus, the 2nd century Bishop of Antioch (the place where according to Acts the followers of Jesus were first called Christians) wrote an apology for Christianity and never once mentioned Christ or Jesus. He states that Christians are called "Christians" because they are anointed (christos) with the oil of God.
In the same book, Theophilus also wrote a complete history of the world, from Adam to Marcus Aurelius, and never once mentions Jesus or Christ, not his birth, not his life, not his death, and not his resurrection. The most significant detail upon which his entire religion is supposedly based goes unmentioned.
Minicus Felix, another early Christian apologist, in his book "Octavius" goes so far as to ridicule the misconception that Christians worship a man who was crucified as a criminal and then was resurrected, equating such nonsense with paganism.

Colossians 1:15-17
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Jesus is the beloved son of God. Who died to cover our sins so that we may gain ever lasting life through him. Jesus is our Lord and Savior.

I do not believe Jesus Christ WAS anyone...
He IS, however, the Son of the Living God, our Creator, our Lord, our Savior, the Messiah, etc...

a) Lunatic - thought He was God and taught it...
b) Liar - knew He wasn't, and still taught it..
c) Lord - was actually who He was...
which one???
Well...His coming back from the tomb 3 days later pretty much eliminates A & B in my book.
As for the folks who will say He wasn't historical...one doesn't have to look at just the Bible for record of His existance...look to the historians of that time...Josephus, Pliney the Younger to name a few.

Jesus Christ is one of three in a triune God. God the Father sent Jesus (God the Son) to earth to pay for our sins. The wages of sin is death.
Sin: The act of disobedience of the law of God (the ten comandments).
Jesus was fully God yet fully man. He was tempted by the Devil, yet he never sinned. He was crucified. He took our punishment upon himself. To recieve this gift all we must do is repent (turn from our sin) and have faith that Jesus is the saivior.
