If you are serious you must make sure you practice. What is the most important thing to remember is that you must make sure you maintain what I call proper playing hygiene. This means your fingernails must be the proper length, your posture must be correct, you need to hold the guitar correctly and most importantly, form the chords and do all fingering with your hand properly positioned.

Many new guitar players find they can finger the notes or form cords more easily a different way than they are taught. Don't fall into this trap. You will quickly discover that what seems easier with simple chords and melodies is detrimental when you move to more complex work or try to pick up speed. Don't get into bad habits.

You have probably heard the expression, "Practice makes perfect." but that is not correct. The true statement is "Perfect practice makes perfect.". Don't waste time learning it wrong. Make sure you practice correctly. If you take weekly lessons, dedicate time to practice. The more you practice the quicker you will start making music.

Making music is the fun part!

1. Don't play to much at one time, or your fingers will be a bloody mess. Build up over time. 2. Try matching your voice tones to your guitar--it's a good way of helping you learn how to tune your own guitar, Try not to use the tuner. 3. Learn all the basic chords first, using the proper finger arrangement, and practice practice practice! It takes practice to get used to arranging your fingers on the chords, but once you have the basics it'll help you to learn the more advanced. 4. Learn the Notes of your guitar. 5. Learn different scales. 6. Check out the guitar tabs of your favorite songs and learn them.

That it is easy to pick up, but it takes many years of dedication to master. I have been playing for 9 years now, and although I don't play everyday, I know there is still so much to learn.

I never had a guitar teacher, so if he/she is good, you have an instant advantage!

Like anything, it just takes practice!
