We really don't believe in Gods.

In the United States, at least, most atheists were raised Christian. I spent as much time and effort on Christian church growing up as anyone, including 9 years of religious education, speaking from the pulpit, etc.

"Scared to believe" makes no sense at all. We live in a culture that thoroughly rewards religious belief, and there are many sanctions against leaving belief in God. Atheism is a moral and intellectual accomplishment requiring quite a bit of courage.

Honest, non-believers really don't believe. We humans tend to assume that everyone thinks the way we do. This leads us to think that if we suddenly wake up a Frenchman in the middle of the night, he'll speak English to us, but it's not the case.

It's the same with religion. We assume that the set of ideas upon which we operate are the only real ideas, and that anyone who claims to have other ideas is either ignorant of our "truth" or is pretending.

But really, non-believers don't believe.

I am non-Christian. I was raised Catholic...my reason for leaving the church had nothing to do with fear. I left because I just could not believe the teachings of the church. I did study other branches of Christianity and they did not make sense to me either.

We just really don't believe.

I was raised as a Christian....it was far scarier to admit to some of my more devout family members that I no longer wanted to be a part of this religion they participate in. How can anyone be too scared to believe? I think a lot of people are too scared not to believe....

I was born an Atheist, as is every human, and have remained one. I have never had the misfortune to be lulled by nonsense and delusion so I cannot speak for others who may have suffered some temporary insanity.

I was raised by a Presbyterian mother and a Roman Catholic father. I decided on my own that I don't believe in God.

Sorry to blow your theory.

really believe what?

scared to believe what?

raised in what way?

It's pretty simple - there is no evidence that your god exists therefore it makes no sense to believe that he/she/it does

I really don't believe.

And a Hindu would tell you the exact same thing...that he doesn't believe in your god either.

As would a Shinto.

Or a Buddhist.

Quit trying to read fear into us. You Christians are the ones who bank on fear: Fear of rejection, fear of exclusion, fear of hell.
