I've visited exmormon but not the other. Most of the posts and such seem to have a teenage, angry at mom and dad type angst about it. But other reports are represented quite well.
But that's what Satan does... truth with lies to make it that much more enticing. People lose their way, but sometimes they find it again... I left the church for 12 years. Never thought I'd be a member again. I'm grateful for missionaries and the work they do.
One cannot believe everything he/she reads on the net. The Holy Spirit will reveal the truth of all things.

It's postmormon.org

I have visited both and prefer the latter.

These sites are not "anti-mormon" sites that seek to draw members away from the Church. They are actually support groups for people who have already decided to leave the Church and don't know where to turn for self-identification and friendship, since an LDS person's entire life generally revolves around the Church, and when you leave it, you leave your old life as well. Friends and family often shun you, and you may have difficulty associating with LDS co-workers as before.

I personally applaud such sites, because leaving a high-control religion (whether you see it as a good or a bad thing) can be very difficult. This is true for Catholicism, the Watchtower, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Scientology, Bah'a'i, or Hare Krishna and not just for the LDS faith.

Edit: Well spoken, Dane. I would imagine that for the first few months of disenchantment, the temptation is high to just trash the Church at any provocation. The site is perfect, but the people who post on it aren't.

I'm not sure if I've ever been to those particular sites, but I did a fair bit of anti-Mormon reading, directed by my sister when she left the church and became an atheist.

Sometimes the information was blatantly biased and inaccurate, and sometimes it was fairly well-presented and reasonable (although shocking). But all of it gave me a feeling of deep darkness and depression. I imagine that exmormon.org might do the same.

It was during the time that I was reading the arguments against the Church's claims that I felt the need to gain a true testimony, through prayer, from God, rather than based on my own mental understanding of things. I received a witness from the Holy Spirit concerning Joseph Smith, that he was a true prophet. Now that I've got that witness, I will believe he was a prophet regardless of whether or not some of the anti-Mormon claims are true.

Reading up on the anti-Mormon stuff gave me the desire and opportunity to obtain a stronger testimony, which has since also allowed me to branch out in researching other religions, without fear of losing my grounding in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thank you ex-mormons!

I've browsed through both a little bit. It's interesting because I've heard from a few people on here, like Norrispenguin said, that it they aren't "anti" sites. But that was the feeling I got as I read some of the posts that people made there. There were quite a few that just made fun of the leadership of the Church or other things. I haven't browsed them thoroughly, but I saw enough to know that I didn't want to see more from those sites.

Edit: Thanks Will, I'll keep that in mind ;-)

Yes I have, though I find it and other sites like it sad. Too often, you see the "I decided that I wanted this vice/lifestyle. etc" and the Church said "no", so I quit and now I'm really happy. So you end up with lots of happy people who chose coffee, a same sex partner, etc. over the Church. That's what agency it all about. I guess you can justify anything if you want to badly enough.

I think I've browsed exmormon.org a time or two. I guess people who leave the church for whatever reasons have a different point of view than I do.

Nope. I don't think going to sites like that would help me at all, since I'm a very strong member of the church. But for those who have left the church and need support, I don't see it as a bad thing, as long as they understand that those of us that are still members don't like to hear anti stuff. I respect people for who they are, and I respect their beliefs, just do the same for me, and I'm fine with whatever they decide.

No I have not. It would be akin to trying to stay healthy and in good condition, then going to a donut shop and sitting down and reading the menu there. Both would be unhealthy. Additionally, if I wanted to have a home free from arguments, strife and violence, I would not rent DVDs or have books and magazine that promote such and which have a lot of that in them. It just makes good sense to place yourself in situations that are helpful to you and avoid situations that don't meet your goals.

Yup! I've been there more than 2 times and I've read many things that ex-Mormons say. But that doesn't affect my testimony, I just read it. I actually go there sometimes when I'm really bored.
