so....the proposal is?
Live hard, die young?
Me...I'm going to revel in each day that God still gives me....it means He still has a purpose for me...maybe I will connect with a nursing home nurse...who in turn will connect with other residents over his or her 15 years, helping them to understand how much they are loved by God, that it's still not too late...and death can be the beginning of wonderful fellowship with the Creator...

Cindy, I think there's a difference between growing old, and growing dependent. My mother's neighbor is 82 years old and still jumps rope. Her health is nearly perfect, and I would anticipate that she'll live to a ripe old age with very few health problems. That is how I would like to live out my old age.
My mother is 74 and almost completely crippled due to arthritis. She feels as you do, that she doesn't ever want to live long enough to enter a nursing home.
I am only 43, and I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. I've only had it a little over 2 years, and already there are days when I need a walker or wheelchair to get around. I've become dependent on others to a degree, and I don't like it.
However, if I were to wish to die now at my age, I wouldn't see my youngest grow up, my middle son graduate or my oldest marry in December. I'd never know my grandchildren and so many other things.
Life is what you make it. I agree that becoming totally dependent is something I don't ever want, I understand where it is that you are coming from. But maybe for the two of us it never has to be that way.

I suppose you're not much of a futurist. With all of the upcoming technological advancements in virtually every field, and the predictions of what will be available to us in 20-50 years, I can't see how anyone wouldn't want to grow old. Especially when reversing the aging process is one of those solutions on the horizon. How would you like to be 80 years old, look and feel 30, and live til you're 150. I might like that, how about you?

In truth, it isn't begin "old" so much as lacking vitality. So long as we have spark and can function with some independence, we could live to be 120 or older.
Most of us don't want to end up in a nursing home until we get to the point where we think that it might be better than the alternative. Most of us won't have to make that decision today, and so I'll wait to see what happens to determine if that's the best place for me, or if it will be time to find Dr. Kevorkian's successor.

Oh yeah; I would love to live to see my great-grandchildren, and maybe even their children. My generation gets a bad rep for being on the computer too much (haha I'm on it right now), but I think we will actually have quite the long life span.
I dont think anyone should ever live wanting to die, so I'll keep kicking as long as God wants me to!

Funny you ask this, I just took a life expectancy test and it said I would live to be about 75.... I used to always say I did not want to live to be old, but I have kids now and want to see them grow and start families of thier own, see my grandchildren... I think 75 would be a good age to go.

There's alot of time to enjoy my palatial villa in the south of France with carefully manicured gardens a stable of vintage sports cars and taking off with my other ageing playboy friend to spend a night at my club on the Riviera.
sipping Martini's and talking about the old days when we ran the city.

I want to live to be as old as I get. I hope I am able to function and my family has living wills in place to assure no heroic measures to keep any of us alive "inappropriately"
Just because we have the technology that allows us force the body to stay alive doesn't mean it's necessary or kind to use it

I guess if my choices are live to be old, or die young, I'll pick the former.
But if I get so old that life is nothing but drudgery, or if a horrific death is looming nearby, I plan to off myself in a quick and painless way.
The way most old people are forced to suffer through drowning in their own mucus, is inhumane. We don't even let dogs and cats go through a death like that.

Not me. I want to live forever but only if science and medicine are really advanced and I don't age past 30!
