Which one is better? Which one do you recommend? I'm thinking about taking a digital photography class or maybe a regular photography class. Can someone just give me some information and advice because I have cameras for both but I dont know which one would be more fun.. etc etc. Any information will be helpful.

*Please no comments on just picking which one I like. I'm not sure yet so I'd like some information. THANKS!!

I'd say do both, but probably not at the same time. Film has different qualities than digital. What are you into? What do you want to be into? Biggest question is what kind of equipment do you have?

For me I like digital. Just not having to change film every 36 frames is a big plus, especially if your in a moving environment like chasing the kids around the yard. But I keep the old Pentax K1000 around from 30+years ago even though its 100% manual, not even auto focus. Why? Because its the only camera I have with a macro lens. And its built like a brick. Drop it and what ever you dropped it on is broken, not the other way around.

Digital is new and frankly I think its better to learn with. You dont have to waste your half used roll of film to change from ISO 100 to 800, just for a few shots and go back to 100. You dont have to have tons of filters that you may or may not use to compensate for the color of the light. You dont have to develop your film and have the cost of that. You dont have to choose just which shot to take for fear that you'll run out of film. You dont have guess which speed of film you will need later on (oops I forgot to pack some 400 speed film). More and more things are being made for the digital world every day, and less and less for film (in fact Nikon is currently only producing 2 film cameras, the F6 and the FM10. I am sure that the other camera companies are following suit). Most film companies are drastically scaling back production of the actual 35mm film because digital is so popular.

My vote is go digital first.

I'll be the one that says, go with digital first.

Why?

Expense. While a film camera may be cheaper, if you look at all the expense or getting film developed and then prints done, versus looking at the images on the computer, you'll always have tp pay to work with film. Digital, once hte initial expense is covered, you could do everything else in computer.

Photography is photography, regardless of whether or not you are using film or digital. There are a few nuances between the 2, but nothing that changes the basics(aperture, shutter speed, ISO).

Whatever you learn, either way will translate to the other. You'll just have to understand the format specific differences(digital has white balance to contend with, film has color correcting films/filters)

Basically film cameras are now obsolete. Both are fun and knowing something about photography using film media is nice information to have, but the future is all digital. My commercial studio has only 2 clients left that still require film and I scan those negatives and make digital prints rather than using more conventional photo method prints. And in fact the scanned digital prints are far superior to any darkroom prints I could have gotten. It is over 2 years ago that I closed my commercial darkroom and am now getting better prints that I ever have.

If you want to be a film hobbyist that is fine, but if you plan on becoming more up to date, or plan on selling some of your work - GO DIGITAL!

I think it depends on what you want to do with photography. If you are taking classes for fun, take the film course. It is a lot of fun to develop your own film and make prints, and learn to use a dark room.

If you are looking into possibly using photography as a career, go with the digital class because they will teach you the basics of digital imaging and get you started on the work in the industry. Film is virtually obsolete for business purposes such as advertising, portraiture, etc. So you would be better off just jumping into digital.

Which ever you choose, good luck, photography in general is a lot fun!

I agree, learn with film first.

Digital photography concepts will make more sense to you, after getting the basics of exposure and development in a regular photography class.

And it's fun- trying to load film into a tank in total darkness, having other students walk into the darkroom just as you're lifting a print out of the developer- good times :)
