I was canceled once due to weather. It was a connecting flight so I got one day in city I hadn't planned on, so had fun. The airline paid for the hotel room. I called my destination hotel and told them I was still coming. They were pretty good as my reservation was a cheap rate, no cancellation, prepaid deal. But they still refunded me for the one day as they had a lot of weather cancellations that day.

If the airline cancelled on you, you will be placed on the next available flights at your convenence. Usually, its pretty hassle free unless you have a cruise to catch. I fly American and probably get cancelled about once every other month due to weather or mechincal problems.

That has happened to me a few times and there wasn't much I could do except pay additional money for another airline.
