The citation will most likely be turned over to a collection agency. The fine will increase until you can convince them that you are totally innocent, or until you pay the fine. If you continue to ignore it, eventually it will be reported to the credit bureau.

If you don't pay the ticket, what happens next depends on whether parking violations are considered a civil or a criminal matter in your state. In some places, they just hand the matter over to a private collection agency who will hound you relentlessly until your credit record gets ruined and they sue you in court for the fees (which could ultimately result in bank account forfeiture or wage garnishment). But here in NY, if you fail to pay a parking ticket, the penalties increase and they won't let you renew your registration, and eventually your license can get suspended. And if you accumulate enough unpaid parking tickets, you will be arrested the next time a cop pulls you over for something else and checks your information. Either way, you will get several notices in the mail telling you to pay up so you will have plenty of fair warnings before the worst happens.

Unless you could prove that there was a hurricane or tornado in the vicinity on the date and around the time the ticket was issued I can't see anyone in authority believing the wind blew it off . The best you could hope for would be a waiver of late fees and a continuance to plead your case to a judge.

You can always go to the Clerk of Courts and see if there is anything on file and pay it. A copy of the ticket book is on file with the Traffic Division that issues the tickets so "someone" does know. Don't ignore it because with today's technology, your car will be tagged for outstanding/unpaid tickets and could be towed and that can be very expensive to deal with.
And why ignore it? Why not be HONEST, act like an adult and face your responsibilities?
This question alone says alot about your lack of character and integrity.

Your license can and probably will be suspended after a set amount of time of ignoring the ticket. If you just ignore it, eventually (generally around 30 days after the ticket is issued) you will receive a late notice letter from the state that basically says pay up or you will be suspended.
Trust me, its just easier to pay the ticket to begin with than go through the headache after your license in suspended.
[edit] Kel - they will not issue a warrant for a petty misdemeanor parking ticket. They will only suspend your license.
[edit] Taylor - Im sorry but I disagree with you. At least in MN, your license is suspended for not paying ONE parking ticket. I have been through many a headache trying to clear up our client's driving records for failure to attend to a parking ticket. So it may not be the case where you are, but you can't make a blanket statement such as you did.

In two words................arrest warrant. Pretty petty reason to spend a couple of hours in jail. Pay the ticket and get on with your life. They probably won't start a man hunt for you but just don't get pulled over after igoring it. I would hate the be the guy that ignored something as menial as a parking ticket and got pulled over on a date or something equally as embarassing. Food for thought.

You won't hear anything about it..until the next time you get stopped by the Police. Then you will get arrested because you have an outstanding warrant for the unpaid parking ticket. They will take you to jail.

Starts off with a second notice in the mail. Then you have late fees with the third notice. After that a warrant is issued for your arrest. Easier to just pay the $20 and be done with it.

What makes you think that sorry excuse hasn't been tried many times before? Pay the ticket ... it *will* eventually catch up to you and will then be a much higher fine or even jail. Don't listen to your 'friends' who tell you to ignore it; they've got nothing to lose, you have. Good luck!

Price of the fine will go up and up and up. And they may and probably will suspend your license until you decide to pay. If you cannot afford to pay your ticket all at once, call the court system, they may be able to work out a payment plan.
