On the top of your list is reliable, get a Honda or Toyota. 2nd is fuel efficient, get a car. If u want a family size car get a Camary or an Accord. If u can use a smaller car get a Corolla or a Civic. Check the models out and buy the one u like the most. All the models fill in your next requirements. Good luck

If you want fuel effecient and safe vehicle, might as well forget SUV. Even a small SUV, because of it's shape uses gas about the same as mid size sedan would. Also, the roll-over risk is much higher.
My suggestion to you is Honda Civic. You might pay little more to purchase but you get it back when you sell it, as its resale values are quite high.

For the best gas mileage that's totally affordable, I'd suggest a Honda Civic. I had one for 5 years with no problems and GREAT gas mileage. Mine was only a two door so I traded it in a few years ago for a Nissan Altima which is also a very nice car (a little more expensive than the Civic, but cheaper than a Honda Accord which is another nice car)
Good brands... Honda, Civic, Toyota.

Geta Subaru Forester. With more awards than any other small SUV. They have great overall room, and the best in class crash test ratings.
Subaru also offers a 224-hp turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter, and thusly equipped, the '07 Forester is one of the quickest compact SUVs on the road.
What Edmunds.com says:
Practical, safe and enjoyable to drive, the 2007 Subaru Forester offers an excellent balance of upscale features and all-weather drivability
What Road and Track says:
The best small SUV on the road today.
And I bet you can see why:

it depends what you need
if u dont need alot of space, then buy a sedan,
but if u do, u can buy an suv.
i would say that u should get a cr-v or a rav4 if u want to get an suv.
but if u want to get a sedan, buy a civic, it is very fuel efficient.
