Ra is the source of all light and heat on earth. Without Ra, there would be no life. When Ra dies, so will life on the earth. The Christian concept of God, on the other hand, is hooey.

Ooo! Ooo! I just made up this joke:

A bunch of Egyptians were worshiping, chanting "Ra! Ra! Ra!"

This crazy Mesopotamian comes along who doesn't know mythology from a hole in the ground and tells his bud "Man, those Eqyptians sure are enthusiastic about their religion."

Try not to split a seam laughing.

Thinking you need god to explain natural events is being caught by the god freak's rhetoric. All of that god stuff happens outside of you.

There is no outside of you. Your experience is all you. When you add god to the Sun coming into view every morning the natural explanation is easy to understand and god seems really superfluous.

It is unimportant to the Sun what we think. It is a giant system that runs on its own. Nothing we as individual humans do can have any impact on the Sun. Nothing we do collectively can have any impact on the Sun. What does a god do? Why would we need one? How would it serve me to put this extra layer between me and reality?

Ra and Baal and Zeus and Jehovah and all the rest have the same origin and the same importance. Like the TAR BABY, if you fool around with it you get trapped. Why would you want to fool around with this obvious nonsense, when you could enjoy the life you have unfettered and in the moment?

As the Spirit Rock, Buddhist say,"If you take care of each moment, you take care of all time."

Ra was the name for egyptian sun god, representing the sun. This is a perfect example and I'm glad you mentioned this. Egyptians had a clear enough understanding to know how important the sun is and will be, they just couldnt express it scientifically. Human mind at work, using other analogies and descriptions to help understand natural processes.
God is the same concept, but has way better spin.

Hooey- well spoken. I mean about your sense of Ra that you don't actually have. Hooey: senseless talk.

Well, if you're calling the sun Ra, sure - but that doesn't make it alive either. Most religions began with sun worship; see source below.

I think that you hit the nail on the head when you said "concept of God." There's a huge school of thought that suggests the Divine has never changed, only the statues and imagery. Christianity has sustained because of a solid distribution system: this isn't a knock, just fact. Check out Joseph Campbell's "Masks of God."
