I've never bred Chihuahuas (or any breed, for that matter), but I've read and heard they often need c-sections. That's why people should only breed if they have the money ($1,000+) on hand and are available to supervise the labor/birth. Of course, breeding requires much more than this, but these two things are especially important w/Chihuahuas.

It is always dangerous for such a small dog to give birth. You are lucky that you only lost a puppy and not the mom.
Coming out bum first means it was not turned properly and it probably suffocated in the process of birth.
I wouldn't breed this dog again as it will probably repeat.

Awww I have an applehead chihuahua too. Sorry about that. Yeah, its probably because they're such a small breed. I hope the other one stays healthy and happy :)

there is no such thing as an applehead chihuahua- tat is a description in the breed standard ( www.akc.org) of the style/shape of head. Why are you breeding dogs if you have so little knowledge about doing so?

I don't know what you did to assist in the birth or if you tried to revive the pup. I know with early intervention and help with the delivery many pups don't have to die even when breach like that. Did you do CPR? I would suggest not breeding if you don't know what you are doing. Evita

It is common for them to give birth "butt" first. It is common for pups to die too. My dog ate her first puppy b/c there was something wrong with it. I was asleep when it happened -- but I know this b/c all I found was a head.

I don't know about chihuahuas specifically .. but yes puppies can come butt first.. That's why you have to be there ready w/ gloves on, so that you can help to get that puppy out.. People say ' let nature take it's course ' and ' she'll know what to do ' but Nature can be cruel and sometimes you have to help... You have to be prepared to get your hands dirty.. You have to be prepared to help get that little guy breathing.. If you aren't then you have no business breeding your dog.. Many puppies are born breach, there is no reason for them to die..

Extremely common, toy breeds are known for whelping problems. Sometimes puppies are born breech. One of my Yorkies had a breech puppy last year. My female is fine & her puppy is healthly. This is one of the reasons research is so important.

many Chihuahua breeders dont care about good genetics they simply breed because they can - and some breed purely to make smaller dogs - as a result you have many Chihuahuas requiring ceasarians.. many moms dying in labor and a good number of pup deaths.
