The British have nice accents. You would not be hassled by anyone in the US.
On Sunday, I met a young British man who was driving a car and got lost in my town. I gave him good directions on how to get back onto the highway. If I did not like him, I could have given him directions that would still have him lost.

You dont need a visa to visit the US being a UK citizen. To be able to work in the states or Canada you need a work visa. Canadian work visas are based on a points system, and American work visas are granted upon having a company in the US to hire you.
As you can travel freely between countries, it should not be that hard to check out cities and do some job interviews.
Good Luck!!

I think most UK citizens are highly regarded in the USA. An English woman was the president of a local organization where I live (in the US) and I've never heard anything negative about English people who live here.
I would think it would be harder to move to the US permanantly that it would be to move to Canada, since Canada has closer political ties to the UK than The US does.

Contact your state department (or equivalent) about working here and getting hte appropriate work Visa. Engineers should have an easier time getting a Visa than other positions.
And yes, the UK is well regarded here. The UK is our best ally in the world right now. But we judge everyone for who they are . . . so if your a good person, you'll be welcomed and fit right in.

To work in the U.S. you will need to get a work visa. You just look at jobs in the U.S. with companies that are willing to sponsor your Visa. Bigger companies will be the ones to sponsor.

as an american married to a canuk, she must sponsor you and they in cnd are harder to find a job in your traning without a lot of hoop jumping and high fees.
you have a highly desired degree. you brits are loved... you are our closest ally.
having ahome in cnd does not give you preference.
i migrated north and did not like it. i have many immigrant friends. engineers as a matter of fact who fared far better in the usa than they would have in the north. one tried that. he is much happied in the usa.

also www.usa.gov see visitors and www.uscis.gov for immg.
cnd imm is www.cic.gc.ca and www.canada.gc.ca for the govt. see spousal sponsorship.
