I have a 7.5 amp 115 volt AC motor, that I plan on running from a 12volt DC battery using an inverter.

My 12volt battery says that it has 5 amp hours, so does that mean I wouldn't be able to run the motor? If not, or if I could only run it for a short time, what would be a better solution for a fairly cheap battery system to power this motor?

Hello there.. Check your application again ..you have a 7.5 amp load at 115volts that's = to 862.5 watts or 1.15hp that seems high but not excessive however a 5aH battery is very small its about 3" wide x 5" long x 5 " tall . this battery only produces about 60 watt hours ...if you had a 100 percent efficient inverter. Inverters get hot and heat is energy so we know that your inverter is not 100 percent efficient...that's why i said check your motor again. Make sure you didn't look at LRA or some other number ,look for hp rating to verify. A one hp motor at 115 volts is about the size of a milk container....As far as a cheap method of battery storage there just isn't one and for you to overcome heat loss you need a recharge rate of 1000watts on the motor. So that means you need an 84 amp charger at 12 volts running all the time just to keep up...Well good luck with the project...From the E......

You'd be drawing about 80 Amps from the battery. It might last 3 to 5 minutes if you are 'lucky'.

One other thing -- that's about the limit of that converter, too. It will get very hot in those 3 to 5 minutes.
