I guess he was a bit melodramatic. Trying to milk his 5 minutes of fame.

It was a quote from psalm 22.
That psalm starts off with the forsaken question, then goes through till at the end, David says he doesn't understand why he's suffering, but he acknowledges that God does know and might have a reason for everything.
By Jesus's invoking that psalm, he was affirming that 1) He (Jesus) was human and subject to dispair just like any of us and 2) that He knew that God the Father would take care of Him no matter how bleak and desperate things were for Him at the time.
If it was a serious question, then those are 2 possible reasons.
If you thought that was a way to prove to anybody that Jesus didn't willingly die, then you're sad and mistaken.

He chose to die, but when He asked this question, He felt seperated from God. He in fact, was seperated from God. God can have nothing to do with sin, Jesus took the sins of all mankind on His shoulders at that moment on the cross, and suffered the greatest torture of all... seperation from God. Jesus was literally alone in those moments before His death. But, by the time He was arrested, He was aware of, and did choose, His destiny on the cross. I do believe since He faced every temptation, that He was tempted not to die on the cross in that manner, but chose to anyway.

*****He chose to fulfill his purpose. It doesn't mean he wanted to... He was human. What human do you know that wants to be beaten and nailed to a cross for people who would not even appreciate it?... That's crazy. But he chose to do it anyways b/c of his love for us all. He didn't say that anyways... The true translation of that would be "My God, My God, Why have you made a bachelor of me?" He was alone at that moment b/c God turned his face... When at that moment Jesus took on all of our sins, God could not look at that. What father would want to? So that is why he cried out... God turned away from him. But nobody made him get on that cross. He could have chosen not to, but thankfully he didn't only think of himself, like we so often do...*****

I would think it's because of what it felt like to be dying on the cross like that. Like when you know you're going into something painful, you look forward to it because of what it'll accomplish but the moment you feel it you instantly regret it.
Scott B and some others I think have the true answer which is that God couldn't look at him while carrying of man's sin.

You have to remember HE WAS HUMAN TOO! No one in their right mind WANTS to go through that kind of pain! Can you IMAGINE what it took for Him to go through that kind of punishment? He could've called "legions of angels" as the Scripture says, to rescue Him from the Cross, but that would've nullified EVERYTHING he was sent here to do! He was God in that he healed the sick, raised the dead and etc.

Jesus said that because when he was dieing on the cross all of the sin of the world was put upon him and God can't look upon sin so he had to turn his head. And that is why Jesus said that because he knew that his father turned his head away!
