Well done for being so determined!

The idea is that when you go to the gym, your stomach is empty.
because if you have food in your tum when you exert yourself, your blood will be divided between going to your muscles and digesting your food which means your brain doesn't get enough blood, and you will either feel faint or you will get a headache.
Either that or you will get stomach pains from indigestion.

So you should avoid eating anything a very minimum of 1 hour before.

However, its good to swig at a bottle of water (maybe half to a whole litre) of water during that hour and then have a bottle of water with you to swig at during your work out.

If you have milk, or juice or a fizzy drink, your stomach needs to digest that like food, There are exceptions to this though - best example would be Lucozade Sport (in the UK) or Powerade (in the US) which is designed for drinking while doing exercise: They have glucose and salt in them which makes them very easy to absorb and get extra energy from while you are working out.

I recommend that instead of going for dinner, have a banana or a cereal bar about an hour before you work out. Then when you come back from the gym, you can tuck into a late meal. (its better to wait an hour after your last exercise too before eating though because your muscles will still be needing "serviced" by your blood.

Good luck and don't give up on the tough days. The days that follow the tough days are the ones where you really notice the progress.

Hi I train four or five times a week, three of which are with a trainer. I work out in the morning so I have been advised to eat about an hour to an hour and a half before my work out. Porridge/oatmeal is brilliant. Sprinkle with a few flaked almonds or sunflower seeds and a drop of honey , [if you like it sweet]. If you work out in the afternoon or evening a wholemeal pitta bread with lettuce, hummus or chicken would be good too. You need energy foods that are low GI. This means that they release energy slowly and give you the stamina to continue a vigorous workout. You need the sustenance to keep going. Keep well hydrated throughout your work out and when you finish you can have a banana or boiled egg or something with protein. Protein keeps you slim. Some form of carbs are needed to help you when you work out. Hope that helps.x

Anything high in protein, will promote muscle growth. To gain maximum muscle growth it is also important to tho eat lots of protein in the three hours after your workout. I f your a beginner to using a gym remember to keep your sessions short 30 to 40 minutes is the ideal time to spend working out regardless of how experienced you are. Provided you spend your time in the gym working out and not chatting with friends. If you find you are having problems with talking to you and distracting you try wearing ear phones. you will find that few people have something so important to say that they will ask you to remove your ear phones.

I know I've wandered off the subject a bit but it is important for beginners to get off to a good start. I f you want more advice on anything feel free to email me.

Something that gives you a burst of engery banana's are good have natural sugar so gives you engery but won't bloat you.

When I used to go straight from work sometimes I'd eat lunch a bit later like 3pm and maybe eat some pasta or rice gives energy to burn off but does need a bit longer to digest.

You'll want liquid, or even water: After all, you'll be losing moisture while exercising.

What about a V-8? There are a lot of varieties of those, and they will give you some vegetables without making you too heavy. And they do come in cans so you can chill them.

Good luck!

have some lucozade or other energy drink about half hour before. dont eat too much as you will get cramps.

if you are planning on getting fitter and not losing weight then it may be a good idea to stock up on carbs the day before. such as pasta or something. this will provide your body with energy, otherwise you will just burn fat and get sore muscles.
