I've tried sending an email to a friend who is in training in the U.S. military. When I send him an email I get a failure delivery email saying that delivery to the recipient failed permanently because the domain name is not found.

I've checked the address for typos, but it does not have any typos. the domain name is spelled correctly and everything after the @ sign is correct (XX.XX.XX@army.mil.gov). Isn't that the format of military emails?

Anyway, I was wondering what the problem could be because I can't think of why my emails arent reaching him.

Thanks!

my email provider is gmail, by the way.

he's not in basic anymore and that's the address he gave me, but I'll try what Candie and some other people said.

E-mail doesn't get "returned."

If you get a message that the E-mail wasn't delivered, I can think of two reasons.

(1) He's in basic training. They don't have access to computers for a while. His E-mail address may not even be set up yet.
(2) You misspelled his name, or used the wrong address.

They do get regular mail... you know... the kind that you use paper, an envelope, and a stamp to send... In the letter you can ask him why the E-mails you've sent bounce. Maybe he knows. Certainly he's in a position to find out.

one: no .gov at the end.

two: if he is in Basic Training he doesn't even have a gov't issued email address yet, as he has zero access to email at all.

three: not all bases provide their personnel with official email addresses, he would have to get an AKO account on his own, and that he cannot do until he is done with tall training.

If nothing works from the previous answer then maybe try making a new email and tell your friend the new email...just a last borrow of cell phone.

Alot of the military people I deal with have @usar.army.mil. All my kids and I have just xxx.xxx@us.army.mil.Or, if he is in training he has not been able to check his email and his box is full.

I'd be surprised if the domain is as wide open as "army.mil." It's much more likely to at least be narrowed down to something like "inscom.army.mil" (for INSCOM) or "usace.army.mil" (for US Army Corps of Engineers) for example.
