The IRS published numbers for their tax collection.

For 2006, the amount collected from individual returns was: $1,236,259,371

Individual returns filed in 2006 were: 133,917,068

I hope that helps.

Michael left out that the total amount collected is in thousands of dollars while the total number of returns is correct.

Total collected for 2006 (correct): $1,236,259,371,000

Individual returns filed in 2006 were: 133,917,068

So, the total paid is $9,231 per tax return. You must remember that married couples and families can file a single return.
