I hear so much about 'liberals and hollywood's influence'.......I happen to be liberal but have no television by choice and do not attend movies unless they have a good message like 'Hotel Rwanda'......so how am I being influenced by Hollywood?

simbha....excellent point......in the U.S. we used to have very different ideas of who liberals and conservatives were.....I don't understand the logistics of the breakdown but neither used to be so polarized.

My thought on this is that if people disapprove of the movies and TV that Hollywood cranks out, then DON'T WATCH IT. Worried about your kids? Why not take some responsibility and supervise them instead of plunking them down in front of the boob tube. I'm sick of hearing that Hollywood is corrupt. You have the power - don't watch TV, don't go to movies, don't buy videos.

Not everything on television sucks, but the vast majority does. I've not "killed" my television, but I take a middle path, which is that I use a programmable digital video recorder to pick and choose only the programs I want to see, then I watch them when I want to and I skip the commercial. The joke here is that with a satellite dish and more than 400 channels, I actually only watch about 4 or 5 hours a week of television, which is less than most Americans watch every day.

As to the whole liberals things, let me just say that there may be a lot of liberal influence in the creative process and in the people who become celebrities, but the people who make the business decisions about what movies and programs get made are hard-a$$ed, conservative financial greed-mongers who don't give a crap about politics, only money.

I think this is because of the media's influence. What I mean by this is that Hollywood has many of the most influential and powerful liberals in the country - and one of the few concentrated areas of such celebrity. Because the media thrives on various conflict within the news, Hollywood is used as the representative embodiment of the liberal side (although many of them can be quite conservative) and various other prominent areas are used as the embodiment of the conservative side.

I just love what Americans call "liberal" and "conservative", btw. Both are moderate on a global scale.

It sounds like you are not in the norm (not a bad thing, especially in this case). I'm not sure that Hollywood's influence is limited to the liberals, even though it does tend to express a liberal attitude.

And yes, there is a segment of society that is definitely brainwashed or totally hooked on the entertainment industry.

It's not necessarily the movies they make (although they do put a lot of political agendas in movies), but it's also about the American obsession with celebrity. Would anyone give a rat's @ss what Barbara Streisand or Susan Sarandon think if they weren't celebrities? Hell no. But since they are celebrities, many people do care what they think, and they follow them as faithfully as any religious person follows their holy book.

Try viewing Hollywood's "Evan Almighty" and "Bruce Almighty"... Morgan Freeman is a great imaginary god like the others.

How can you not own a TV, I mean you've missed Lost, Heroes and all of those other addictive programs that I need in order to live my life.
