I am going to repaint these rooms. Currently they are both white. I want to paint them different colors, but they share a wall that runs the length of the two rooms. How can I make a separation point between the two rooms & colors?

at the base of the wall is a baseboard heating vent, which also travels the length of the wall.

the wall is on the right hand side . 4 ft from the wall is the stairway which divides the two rooms, & provides the dining room wall on one side of stairs & living room wall on other side of stairs. I hope that's not too confusing.lol.

At the point you want to seperate the 2 areas you can install a section of mirror on the wall, floor to ceiling, 24" or so, wide. In front of the mirror place floor plants and a free standing, hinged dividing screen behind them. ( You can purchase a tri-fold free standing screen that may have fabric panels, rattan, bamboo, wrought iron, etc. to match your decor) You can then paint the wall a different colour on each side of the dividing mirror. I would also suggest you try to bring a little of each colour into the opposite rooms. You can accomplish this with accessories, cushions, upholstery, etc. Or if your screen has fabric in the panels, choose a patterned fabric that features both wall colours. This way you will maintain some continuity in the two areas and yet still give each their own feel and identity. Good luck with your project.

Our house is set up the same way ~ it really doesn't work to paint the two areas different colors because the seam will look so terribly obvious.
What we did, was arrange our furniture to create the separation and selected art work that brought in different colors. The living room has the brighter artwork (more reds and greens) whereas the dining room colors are more muted.
It might also help to physically separate the rooms ~ I've seen it done with a couple of tri-fold Chinese Screens which can look quite stunning if done right.

We have a similar situation in our home with the living and dining areas being connected. We have chosen at this time to have them the same color. We chose Dutch Boy "bleached sandstone". It adds the bright openness to the room that I was wanting but also a bit of warmth. In the beginning I thought maybe that I would use a rustic shade of red for the dining area. But for now I am toying with the idea of painting the interior side of exterior doors in these rooms with the red. This will draw the eye and be eventually accompanied by rugs, lamps, pillows or pictures that will tie it all together. The nice thing about the bleached sandstone is its ability to complement or be complemented with a wide variety of colors. Use your imagination and don't be afraid to use color.

You could paint that one wall with an accent color. Other than that it will be difficult to divide the rooms with a color because the dividing line will be obvious. If you keep both rooms the same color you can still change the appearance by the use of accent colors added to the room. For example, say the walls were a harvest gold color, in the dining room you could modify the color by say adding reds in your drapes and placemats or tablecloth. In the living romm you might accent with blues, pillows, drapes, artwork.

Put a narrow book self unit where you want the two spaces to seperate, then paint your two rooms different colors. You can put anything on the selves not just books.
