It depends on where you are. This time of year, most cats are done breeding. Look in papers, pennysavers, in the supermarket by the exit. IN NJ, Bergen county, there is a lot of them now, from a sick family in a mansion. Call the Bergen Co SPCA.

You should be able to get a free kitten just about anywhere since it seems like nobody wants them. Check your local newspaper. Humane societies and other animal shelters and rescue centers usually charge an adoption fee which covers the cost of vaccinations and neutering/spaying.
If there are any feed stores or farms in your area, talk with the people who own them or work there. I know at Quality Feed in Versailles, KY, the owners are always looking for people to take kittens off their hands. They seem to be the place people drop their unwanted kittens off to.

FREE kittens are never FREE - they will cost you more in the long run as they still require vaccination, deworming.. might have ear mites.. and should be health checked - what will happen if that free kitten has a heart defect and dies 3 months later? or has a problem that requires surgery?
its always cheaper to ADOPT one from a shelter who has been checked etc.. since shelters are non-profit they charge less to adopt than it would cost for you to do all this on your own..
free adult spayed or neutered are cheapest and can often be in the newspaper..
its NEVER good to take FREE ones - you are simply making it easier for irresponsible pet owners and if you have a problem do you think these people will help you or take it back???
if you cannot afford to pay for a pet - you cannot afford to own one.

You can't really get a free kitten. You have to pay for the food, toys, litter box and the litter, and vet trips, and spaying/neutering if it hasn't been spayed/neutered yet.
You should get a kitten from an animal shelter. My Humane Society is good and they have so many homeless kittens if you look on their website. It's good because we have 3 animals from there, and they are all still here. That is one 10 year old cat and 11 year old cat and a 2-3 year old German Shep. But it depends on if your Humane Society is good. Sorry for saying so much. My point is that my animals from the Humane Society are healthy.

My sister work as a veterinary receptionist and she said that pet owners always leave little kittens at the door or inside her workplace. They give away kittens every month. You can probably check your local vets & see if they have any kittens up for adoption. She was going to take a couple home last month, but my parents wouldn't allow it, even though they were free.

Like everyone else said, either the newspaper or your local shelter.
But remember that ads that say "free to a good home" can be bait for scientists looking to do animal testing, so if you see those ads, hurry and save a kitten!

Look in the paper, there's always ads for free kittens. If not, go to an animal shelter, you may have to pay for it, but it will already have it's shots. It'll probably be cheaper than getting the shots done yourself.

Try the newspaper in the classified section. People also hang up signs for free kittens at veterinary clinincs and sometimes on grocery store bulletin boards.
