3 weeks ago my cousin was arrested in Signapore for littering and refusing to provide details to the arresting law officer. Following his court appearnce, the judge sentenced him to 4 lashes of the rattan cane. He will be fixed in a bending-over position to a metal or wooden frame and is told to expect permanent scarring of the buttocks. The lashes will be carried out privately in a prison, with a prison officer and a medical officer. His lawyer tried to have the caning carried out in installments but the judge said he would have the entire sentence carried out at once. The persons carrying out the caning are specially trained prison officers who deliver the maximum force in each lash.

Of course my cousin is depressed about this. He is currently on release without passport but must report to a detention centre in September, 3 days before the flogging. He wants me to travel out to meet him and provide support. If I go, I will have to cancel my holiday in Ibiza. What will I do ?

Mary, they get you in jail, 3 dyas before the lashes so they have your *** good and ready. You can have a shower before the lashes but no vaseline. Maybe a little afterwards to treat your raw ***. He is from London.

Texican, Ausitin is probably the only element of Texas that has any character. Outside of that, Texas is a shallow and unhistorical state, much like the rest of the USA.

I might be wrong, but I don't think your cousin would have gotten corporal punishment for littering if he had been cooperative with the cop. It's always best to be polite when traveling abroad, especially if you're not sure how the laws and courts work there. Have him contact the British embassy. Any time you're accused of a crime in a foreign land you at least have that legal right. They may be able to convince the Singapore government to give him an alternative sentence, or lighten it somehow. You might even want to try reporting it to the British newspaper agencies. The Singapore authories may be more willing to negotiate if they don't want bad press that might result in less tourism profits.

Wow, that does suck, for littering? What did he litter with? I won't be traveling to Singapore. Funny I just finished a pro anti spanking response to another question. This really cements my anti spanking beliefs. I wish I knew a way to get him out of this but I think that you should try to publicize this as much as possible before and after, and encourage him to write an article and editorial about it. Of course, he will get mixed responses but at the least it will be an anti Singapore campaign. That is an unacceptable form of punishment for a non violent offense, for residents or foreigners. I really thought Singapore had a little more advanced and developed attitude than that. I wonder if they punish the human traffickers that frequent their country in the same manner. I do know that when you go to another country you should be very careful to know and follow their laws. Some places seem to be notorious for prosecuting/punishing foreigners and their punishments are a lot more barbaric. As to the question of should you go to provide support and lose your holiday, I think it depends on the relationship that you have with your cousin. I can think of many people who I would cancel holidays and even major operations, etc if they needed support in a situation like this. I know that if I asked a person to come and show support for me in a traumatic situation such as this and they didn't come, that would seem like betrayal to me and there's not many excuses I could make for them or accept from them, especially if it was just a lost holiday.

Wow---that sucks. Is your cousin a US citizen? If so I would contact the US Consulate in Singapore to see if he can get out of the punishment.
Have him rub his buttocks with Vaseline or some other lotion before he goes so it won't hurt as bad....it should slip.

Any nation outside the U.S. is either much less free or a total Third World craphole. And Singapore is the worst example of uncaring government.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Everything has consequences and they must be faced. 4 lashings, I highly doubt he'll die from that and it would be a good lesson to teach him to follow the laws set forth. If the US had harsher punishments like other countries it would be much safer than it is now.
